Post 97GT Has to Beat LT1 !!

Well the LT1 that I raced this week and beat now is trying to pick on some of my other stang buddys. My friend has a bone stock 97GT from what we know. Its a 5spd, and it feels pretty damn fast, it actually surprized me. Anyways, hes got about $700 to spend and we gotta beat this Z28. I think it doesnt run much faster than 13.8's at best. Because I run 13.8's on street tires, and I beat him on my street tires.

If he's got a bone stock 97GT, he's running way slower than 13.8....
To be honest, a decent driver will be able to pull even 15s with it. (That's what Yellowjacket pulled when she was stock...)

A freak might pull a 14.8, but don't count on it...

For 700 dollars, its time to bring out the NOS and a pair of borrowed drag radials...

Tell him to go rent a 99+ Gt for the day. There you go, problem solved!

Serouisly though, 700$ to make a 98 GT beat a LT-1. Hmmmmm thats a challenge, Hammers route will do it, But I personally wouldnt do it that way. Probably because I have no experience with Nitrouis.

Damn, I dont think it can be done for 700$. Oh, how about a set of 4.10's for the rear. Thats a start. Then maybe an off-road H pipe, and some BBK pullies, or March, there cheaper than the Steeda.

A lighter wieght drive shaft can be worth some ponies to, plus it cuts the wieght.

I've heard (Im not sure, this is what I've heard though) that Larger throttle bodies, and cold air kits actually hurt the early 96-98 4.6L performance.

Throw in some 4.10's and a 100 shot...

If he wants to stay NA, Do the 4.10's, Pulleys, and OffRoad X/H-pipe...

Cool

With only $700 I'd say that NOS is the only way to go - for a guaranteed victory.

But Hammer -- 15s I've bone stock GTs pull deep into the 14s and the lightly modded GTs (gears, exhaust and pulley set) low 14s.

The exhaust pulleys and gears would be a good investment too. Because if he loses he will have some ofthe necessary mods completed already.

Either way ... good hunting.

Sorry Sky, Zex is sold....

and Smoke, If you see a bone stock 96-98 GT pull a 14.5 or faster with regular street tires (no drag radials), send me a pic. The fastest I've seen one go (K&N and cat-back) at Ennis, and I've seen a lot of them, is a 14.9 with a 2.1 60 foot. I was averaging straight 15.0s with my normal 2.2 60 foot on the old Gatorbacks...

I'm a BIG defender of my car, but I'm realistic...

Heck, I've seen 99-01 GTs clock 14.5s to 13.9s, which tends to be about right considering the 35 peak hp increase and the much better power curve.... (thanks to the cylinder head gods)

Just my observations....

To clarify ... deep into 14s.
14.9-14.7s. So we're discussing 3 tenths but in any event running Nittos high 14s was the standard.

No flames ... Again, my observations.

HEHE , Thanks for the clarification Smoke...
Yea, I can see high 14's with a set of drag radials...
(A good 60 foot makes all the difference)

And by the way, its refreshing to see folks who observe AT THE TRACK instead of IN A MAGAZINE.
(Thank the lord for Mustangworks and the members of Modular Madness...)

the best i did was a 14.75 @ 95mph with xpipe, gears, catback, t/b, gutted maf. i'm pretty sure i could have gotten a 14.5 if i could drive. the only way for him to win is nos. but if he saves up another $500 he could do the headswap, providing he does the labor. this would pretty much put him in the mid to low 13's on drag radials and if he still uses nos a real low 12 is almost a guarantee. i would save up for the swap. better foundation. jmho.

For further reference check out this thread from the Corral.

I seen and heard for low low times but I haven't seen them. This is incredible. But again it's proably the driver.

Of course I haven't been to a track to see any times in 10 months. Working too much and too far away.

Good times in that thread, but I didn't see one that wasn't modified with at least a few bolt ons (and some had heavy doses of bolt-ons and gears).
Most of those strong runners were hitting 2.0 60 foots with either great driving, drag radials, or some upper and lower c/a's.
As I said before, the launch means EVERYTHING.
Two tenths in the 60 foot can mean 3 or 4 tenths at the traps!

As much as I'm glad to see some strong runners, I'd be really surprised to see a bone stock 96-98 GT pull a 14.6 or faster on street tires.
(and then I'll find the driver and shake his hand...)

Sky- hey man there is a guy I know from my local track that has a 98GT with full exhaust, pulleys, and I think a chip. (I will find out for sure thursday night at test and tune) and he is trapping at 101mph on street tires and running 14.3's- this is with spinning the whole way through 1st and halfway through second. I personally have never seen a 96-98GT run anywhere close to this MPH with all he has done, but he does it every week. He does spin alot, and his MPH varies from 98-101. The car isn't a light weight either as he had Xenon side skirts and rear fascia, saleen double decker wing, aftermarket front fascia, and a bunch of other parts in the looks department. As I said, I will find out for sure thursday as to his exact setup and let you know. I'm pretty sure he has long tube headers, and MAC pro-chamber, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Sky- yeh, I was really amazed too. But I saw it with my own eyes and you know I wouldn't lie to you. I emailed him tonight and here's what he has:
pulleys
80mm MAF
75mm T-body
Mac full length headers
Offroad H pipe
2 chamber flowmasters
Jet pro chip
and wires
Thats it, and he trapped out at 101mph last week. He's getting 3.73's this week, so that will help some more.

You know I've seen TryMe pull a 14.8 out of a 97GT Vert., but... that was on an extremly good day. The vert is capable of a consistent 15.0 with a good driver... make your bets on the coupe. I'd say 14.7 stable. But then again that might be the Canadian Air!
