5.0 question

i was just wondering what are some of the drawbacks of using an X-303 cam with stock heads?

Re: 5.0 question

The real question is what are the advantages because I can't think of any.

Re: 5.0 question

exactly what i was thinking. Theres this 91 LX i'm looking to pick up and well...heres the specs...
. x303-cam, 3:73 gear, Mac 3" exhuast, short shifter, racing clutch,TRW pistons, underdrive pulleys, k&n filter. Its at a dealership and i was wondering if it would be a good grab for like 3k? But if its got the cam and the heads are stock whats the point? I mean would it be a good performance buy or just a gas hogging waste of time?

Re: 5.0 question

I guess if you want to call lose of all bottom end torque and piston to valve interference an advantage, then go for it!

On the bright side though, since you won't have much bottom end torque anymore, you might get around in the snow a lot better.. :D

Re: 5.0 question

well thats good to hear lol...too bad GA doesnt have snow :( lol. I'm not 100% sure if the heads are stock on it but they werent mentioned in the add. So i thought id ask.

Re: 5.0 question

You could always ask to take a test drive. I originally misread your post. I thought you wanted to put an "X" cam on a stock head engine.
Whoever installed that cam, had to of had the pistons notched.
I hope someone wouldn't have gone through all that trouble getting pistons notched and yet retain the stock heads or at least not have mods done to them like port work and larger valves.
Go take a test drive and see if you can get a good look at the heads to see if maybe they are aftermarket or not.

yeah definitley plan to test drive her to see if there are any glitches i should know about. Ticking, knocking, smoke, etc. I hope all goes well cause she clean as hell not a spot of rust and only 2900 bucks which imo is a pretty good deal :D

Re: 5.0 question

Nice car. I would also check cruising rpms to double check that there are, indeed, 3:73 gears in it too.
It should have a pretty lobey idle for it having an "X" cam. The power range for that cam doesn't come in until higher in the rpm range(~3500-6500rpms).
The price seems fair. How many miles does it have?
Check the floor boards and hatch area for rust. That's the problem areas for rust on mustangs.
Good luck. I hope it all works out for you.
Let us know if you get it or not.

She has around 148k on the body i beleive. Engine not too sure i'm assuming it was rebuilt not too long ago. I will def check the gear status when i test drive it. And will def check for rust as well. Thanks for the advice and support i appreciate it. :)

Re: 5.0 question

If the car truly has stock E7 heads with an X cam, it's going to have a pretty crappy idle, along with a crappy low end, decent midrange, and crappy top end.

The only reason I could see an X cam being used is if the person that had the cam installed was using a big N20 system or something like that. The X-303 is supposed to be a decent nitrous cam, well, at least when it came out many years ago.

The E7's would absolutely require upgraded springs to work with the X-303, and the pistons would need flycutting. It makes no sense to me why they would choose that combination.

Re: 5.0 question

I refuse to believe that anyone is dumb enough to use an X-cam with stock heads. I would bet money that either the heads are not stock or it has a B or E cam instead of an X cam.

Nice car though.
