Default jap cars

I am a die hard Ford V8 fan and I love to hear the stories of the American V8's beating those 4 and 6 jap cylindered cars, especially if they have the NOS. Any good story's would be appreciated. I love the fact (being sarcastic) that they put NOS on a 4 banger and get good times out of there run, when I can do the same with a normally asperated 8. Don't get me started on those cars. I was watching one of the best channels on TV, involving nothing but racing and found them doing a segment on "Drifting" now this would have been new to someone that has never driven a front wheel drive, but they were in rear wheel drive cars. I have been doing this for years, its called fishtailing in the U.S.
If anyone reading this want's to debate the Jap cars VS American cars Fell Free I would like to play!!!!!

You like spending lots of $$$ to keep up with a stock domestic? Seems kind of silly to me.

Don't hate the imports.... Just the ricers.
There's a huge difference.

well for what its worth most imports make a lot of power per cubic inch compared to some of the american v8's like some of the chevy 350's make 280 hp? thats under 1 hp per cube you take a civic SI motor at 160 hp and 97 cubes thats 1.65 hp/cube - see the difference? i could also defend that they get upwards of 20-30 mpg where my v8 sees like 12 haha or even take a stock 5.0L that makes .75 hp/cube - then again a 4 banger will never have the torque of a v8 - have u seen the new wrx sti's? 300 hp/300 trq from an import thats pretty impressive along with it being AWD. now if you see a civic witha bunch of stickers, lowering kit, fire extinguisher, and a monster tach - yeah i can see what your trying to say, all show no go ..and maybe even no show. but there are SOME imports out there that are quite fast.

I'd rather have a '04 Cobra for the same price.

I can understand the amount of HP per cubic inch is impressive but they are getting it one of two ways, turbo or NOS. If your running NOS I hope you have enough money for constant refills. As far as the turbos you have lost the great MPG due to fuel injector increase. not to mention Both will make engine life short.
I guess I shouldn't complain on this go, build and spend all your money on imports,

more V8's for me.

Actually, the civic SI's 160hp is N/A. No turbo, no nitrous. There goes your theory

just went to honda.com and priced that civic si the only options i added was the vtech cover and fog lights and it was over 20 grand! 20 grand and at the end of the day you still have a honda civic in your driveway, and i bet the ins. is just as high as on a mustang. scion makes a tC model that has a 2.0 160 horse (honda brand i think) and it starts in the mid 16's, still more than my tight ass is gona pay for a car. now like i said im not down on imports the engenreing is great but man are they proud of it!

Ah I love this topic! The "jap's", as someone so eloquently put it, make bullet proof motors, are they capable of putting out hp numbers of a V8, not realistically (drop $10k on a stock honda and you might have 300 or so hp, drop $10k on a Mustang GT and you're gonna have well over 600 hp). I've owned several Mustangs and several Japanese cars, both for completely different reason. If you are into power and want to do the hot rodding thing, V8 Thunder is the only way to go. Absolutely beyond me why "kids's these days" are trying to hop up little 4 cyclinder engines. If you're really into the power thing, there is nothing else but a V8. Whenever I need a "normal" car, Japanese is the only way to go. They are a blast to drive compared to a similar American car, they are fast (relatively speaking) and fun to drive, ultra-reliable (try 125,000 and not single drop of ANYTHING leaked out of my '91 Nissan Setra SE-R, which was autocrossed very frequently and drag raced). You ever compare a Japanese stick shift on an American 4-cyl to a Japanese one, what a freaking joke! American V-8 sticks are great, strong, positive feels, but what the heck on the Mustangs stick being so far forward, this bettter be fixed in the '05's. I just had a brand new Cavalier for a rental the other day, talk about a piece of sh*t!!! Or how about a Pontiac Grand AM!! (no offense to anyone who owns these wonderful cars). The only decent 4-cyl American car I ever drove was the little 4-cyl Oldsmobile (Alero or something), which really wasn't that bad, and GM got rid of Oldsmobile. I do have to say Saturns aren't that bad, but look at what GM has done, sucked Saturn back into the GM corporate structure, so they will hit the crapper pretty soon also. Don't even get me going on Chrysler. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of people I know who have enacted the Lemon Law on their Chryslers. I do have to say I am partial to Fords, they're about the only American brand I'd consider for a "regular" car. Decent interiors and ok reliability. Sorry for all the ranting, but if it wasn't for all the "jap" competitoin Detroit would still be serving up Chrsyler K cars, Ford Escorts and V8 Mustangs and Camaro's with 150 hp!

I agree with who ever said that thing about there being a big difference between ricers and imports. Ricers are the stupid kids (tons where i live) that have a stock car with big wing. But i wouldnt turn down a good deal on a toyota supra. Quick cars, and rear wheel drive. I had a 89 toyota corolla, and it was a really good car. I think it had like going up to 200k and it ran awesome when i sold it. Kinda kickin myself in the ass on that one, bought a 90 jeep wagoneer and its broke right now at about 130k. (head gasket?) All cars have their places, and why do people care so much any way??

import cars make decent winter beaters. Drove my '83 Carb'd Accord into the ground last winter with some 235k on it. The only major problem I had was installing a new timing belt.

Comparable ricers to non ricers. This weekend at the Local 8th mile strip. Older Rx7, silly can and some other little things, among a ton of aftermarket body parts running 9.5's all day long. Where as the '97 Integra with a turbo was running between 8.13 and 8.6 all day long. Now that Integra was actually keeping up if not beating most of the other cars that were up against it.

Default Sorry, long

Sorry to ressurect this post after a month, but I've been incommunicado, so I missed out.
First off, there is a big difference between ricer and an import driver. It seems like a lot of the tuner crowd are trying to "make more with less" , and take it as a challenge. The guys that are able to make huge hp out of smaller engines are doing it more for the challenge than because they think that a "musclecar/sportscar" with a i-4 is a better performer than a v-8.
The problem is ricers, these are usually kids that dont know any more about cars than they learned in FF2 or whatever it was called. They buy this dogma that just because an engine is more efficent, it is better at everything including performance. I have a lot of respect for the things some of the built imports can do, but most of the ricers missed the lesson from "fight club" that "sticking feathers up your *hindquarters* dooes not make you a chicken." Looking like a race car does not make you a race car. This of course has been taken to an extreme, as are most things these days. Hence Fart cans, wings, graphics, carbon fibre everything.....
My favorite quote about rice: "Youre rice if you care more about looking fast then being fast.
As to the mention of why "kids these days" go rice, I think that sentence sums it up nicely. Rebellion. If you grew up in a house that worshipped american iron, and (counting you were a car person) wanted to rebel against the authority figures, embracing a subculture dedicated to racing and (In theory) beating traditional v-8 tech, this would be perfect.
(as to the reality of it, I think a lot of that is absorbed, i.e. rationalizing. "Man, I just missed third", "But I still make more hp/litre") Real speed costs money.
I would say that the biggest thing that we could learn from the import crowd would be to look at the whole car. I have to say that generally, they do out handle domestic sports cars ($per$). We do tend to give a little too much emphasis toward just the one direction
And as far as drifting, I havent really decided as to it merits as a racing style, per se, but we (the US) have never tried taking the slide out that far and long, and seeing what we could do with it.
Its also interesting to note that the majority of cars that I've seen used for this sport are RWD/AWD.
Anyway, I choose to respect those who genuinly are trying to build a faster car for itself, and deeply loathe those who buy dogma over facts, and image over substance.

Wow, that kinda came outta nowhere, /rant

(drop $10k on a stock honda and you might have 300 or so hp, drop $10k on a Mustang GT and you're gonna have well over 600 hp).

So what do i need to buy with 10k to get 600hp?
