Thumbs up LS1 goes down to a 6-banger!

OK, there I was minding my own business heading home from Hope Depot with a 40lb. bag of concrete mix and some other stuff in the trunk on my '87 GN. A nearly full tank of approximately 50-50 mix of Amoco 93 and Sunoco 100 is in the tank. With just me and less than ½ tank of gas the total weight is 3800lbs. I'm guesstimating my total weight was around 3900lbs at that time.

My one and only trip to the strip netted the following times (60', 660'@mph, 1320'@mph):
  • 2.379, 9.427@76.66, 14.583@95.14
  • 2.146, 9.036@77.85, 14.118@96.36
  • 2.197, 9.103@77.19, 14.211@95.95
  • 2.296, 9.269@23.05, 14.395@95.54

Not too good considering I have a Jay Carter 93 street chip, 9" K&N, Terry Houston 3" downpipe Jet-Hot-coated downpipe, Walbro 307 amd Accufab regulator, and Sunoco 100 in the tank. All mods are listed here.

Looks like I'm hurting mainly on the top end. There's no posi so I didn't expect the 60' times would be that good on street tires. I would expect a bone stock GN to run 97mph in the ¼-mile. I thought I'd run at least 100mph with my mods.

Anyway, the race took place on an Interstate overpass. There's stoplights on both sides, for the on/off access ramps. The distance between the lights is about 1/8-mile, give or take a few feet.

There's a new white Z28 in the right lane at the red light. I brake torque it and one wheel breaks loose. I look over but he keep looking straight ahead. He lunged his Z28 forward in anticipation.

Green light - GO! I've got a little spin, and I think he did too. I put the pedal to the floor when the peg-leg hooks and by that time he was ahead by a fender.

But I quickly reeled him in and put a fender on him. As we approach the stoplight on the other side, which were green, he dropped back some more. Did he lift? I don't know. But I've got at least a car on him.

The 4-lane merges into a two lane. I hit the brakes and slow down to let him go by. We exchange the obligatory "thumbs up" and I make a U-turn at the merge. I get on the Interstate access ramp and head home, claiming victory.

I know you might get burned a little by other people on why you post something else other than a mustang burnin someone but nice kill anyways. I like when a variety of people post stuff. The Club Si forum is hardly about Si's!!

You have a really nice car. I love Grand Nationals. My first favorite car is the Mustang. 2nd is the Grand National (specifically '87).

With the gears I got on now, if we raced, it'd be a GOOD race. You 90dpscoupe and I should get together and run each other.

Aren't you glad you got the GN instead of the Impala???

BTW, what gears you got??

Dude, before you react to my post keep in mind that anyone on this site who knows me will tell you I don't subscribe to the flame everything that is not Pro-Chevy mentality. I've even made suggestions to some members racing LS1s of how to take advantage of the LS1's weaknesses and I've posted kills where I've been killed by Mustangs and Supras. With that in mind, read this post and you will see what I think you ran into.
http://web.camaross.com/bb/Forum6/HTML/025563.html

Check out the pics of the car reffered to in that post http://www.geocities.com/melwebdesign/P9150102.jpg http://www.geocities.com/melwebdesign/P9150101.jpg http://www.geocities.com/melwebdesign/P9150097.jpg

I'm not flaming or critizing your kill...but I think you may have run into a car like this one which would account for it's lack of LS1-ish performance. I can tell you that on my worst day I ran a 14.56 missing third so it just makes it hard for me to believe that the car you ran into was an LS1 on the inside.

That's I guess one of the reasons that the owner of that post got hammered so hard, cause it can get confusing.

Do you live in a high altitude area? my buddys stock GN ran 13.9 @ 97mph stock! I do like GN's they are easy to mod and respond quite well! I have only had my LS1 T/A to the track 1 time and made only 2 passes, my car is basicaly stock with 273 gears and street tires, the first pass I punched it and roasted the tires, got out of it and then back into it, 2nd run I rolled out and eased into it it spun just a little bit, here how the two runs went:
60FT: 2.765
1/8 : 10.023
MPH : 82.63
1/4 : 14.663
MPH : 105.93
__________________
2ND PASS:

60FT: 1.996
1/8 : 8.595
MPH : 84.71
1/4 : 13.176
MPH : 106.49
with a set of drag radials I could have got a high 12 sec pass out of the car.

Ls1jay, look at your 1/8 mile mph's? they are only 2mph apart? im just confused, i mean i dont see how you made up for that mph, after losing so much traction? and more than a full second difference in the 1/8 mile time.

90dpscoupe, Its because the first pass I just sat there spinning, got out of it, and then back into it! I had not moved much from where I started! I could send you a copy of the actual time slip if you wan't and you could look at it!! it would be the same as if you tripped the light at the track and sat there for 10 minuted, you could still get the same MPH, I spun for a few feet and lost a little MPH, then got back into it and still managed to get a good MPH, just not as good as when I eased into the throttle and just spun a bit and it took off, thats how I made the 2nd pass!! I may have lost some MPH on the 2nd pass because I hot lapped the car and the engine temp was at about 185 degrees or so! let me know if you want to see the slips!!

Ok, ok, it's not that important, but i know you can get a good mph after spinning, just not that much time difference, and same mph, cool though

Dude, i dont dislike anyone, especially (any) fellow members of this site, whatever car they own. I just wanted to question ya, and you said you missed a gear and still ran a 14.5? i think you could of made up for it a little better like a 14.3-1, because a low 13 second car should only spend a couple tenth's regaining, maybe you took your time, dont know?

i missed 3rd and still ran 14.7 running a crx.

LS1Jay,

I welcome you here. Good to have a mix.

Every once in a while, a guy will post some 1/4 mile times that just don't add up (not saying it's you). People here are just watching out for those kind of people so they usually question anything that looks kinda weird. That's all. If you know what you ran, explain the apparent discrepancy and don't worry about it.

You always get some flack about your posts? That's not too abnormal for an LS1 driver in a Ford Mustang message forum, yes?

90pscoupe, I didn't miss a gear, it's a automatic (A4) and I did run a 14.6, I did hessitate for a moment, I started to just coast down the track, but decided to get back into it to see what kinda' MPH I would get since this was my first pass as the 1/4 mile track, I noticed that in your profile you like to fish, well so do I, mainly Bass, but I do some saltwater fishing too! I also build custom fishing rods, I have a website for Fishing, Rod building & My T/A if you would like to see them let me know and I'll post them up here for you, I also play the guitar, I have been for 13YRS, and playing the drums for 23YRS, and love dragracing!!!! so I guess we have very similar intrests. Oh and thanks for the welcome Fox Body!!!!! Later Guy's . JAY

LS1JAY, it would be the same if a Cobra or a GN claimed a 13.1, stock. There would be a few questions. If you can do it, great. Most of us have never seen it for any of the afore mentioned cars. Stock, specific.
