Angry went to trak...tooo slow! help!?!

I went to Orlando Speedworld last night, temp in the 80's, humid, but I thought I could run faster. I ran a best 14.461 at 98.15mph. My 60' time was 2.259, 1/8 mile 9.403 at 76mph during that same run. I have radial Falkens on the car & stock 3.08 gears. I launched at 1800rpm with little tire spin & shifted 1st at 5200, 2nd at 5300, & went through the traps at 5500 rpm in 3rd gear & it felt like it was still pulling! I dont know if I should be in 4th gear or what...You all are great with the advice on this board & I would appreciate your help & advice more than you know. Thanks!

Maybe you should run the rpms up alittle more before shifting.

i'll be talking with my new mechanic next saturday about diagnosing my car's output...it felt like it was losing power over 5200rpm's in 1st gear and 2nd gear, so i dont know if i can take the rpm's up much, but i'll try again & see what happens. 12.80's with pullies & exhaust?!? i thought 13.5-13.7 was best et on these cars basically stock? hope my mechanic can help me out, i'll let you know.

Given your mods, your ET and mph are ok.

As for the 12.80's with exhaust and pulleys on the 93 Cobra...ugh, well I don't think so. Maybe 13.80s is what you meant?

302 LX Eric,
Thanks for the reply...I feel better knowing that it is possible that I dont have a slug of a car...it turned 99K miles on the way home from the track & my friend from work(a Pont Grand Prix GTP driver) thinks my engine is just 'old & tired'...I think that's just his GM mind talking...and I still can kick his car's *** any day. I have some 3.55's in the garage but my mechanic thinks I should go with the 3.73's for better track times. The Cobra just became my weekend cruiser as my wife & I just added a '01 5.0 Explorer to our stable. I just have to dsecide on the gears b4 the end of the month & new car payments start...

venumus93 - I looked through your post again and just wanted to provide a few more comments/details on why I think your times aren't that bad....

1) 3.08 gears. The 3.55's will definately help out at the track, the 3.73's even more. I have 3.55's in my LX and love them. A great bang for the buck mod.

2) Your 60' times are about as good as mine (ie they are not that great). But you are launching on street tires which makes it even more difficult. A 2.0 60' will really bring down your ET (2 tenths better at the beginning of the track could be as much as 4 tenths at the end!)

3) The weather conditions were less than ideal and you still managed a 98 mph. Not bad at all.

4) 99K is not too bad either. There are guys on this site with 160K + miles and still running strong! You may need a good tune-up (plugs, wires, cap & rotor, oil change, fuel filter, etc.).

Keep practicing, and if I were you, I would definately get those gears installed. You will love them.

Good luck, E

I have 207,000 miles on my 87 GT. Your mileage is ok for the 5.0s. they hold up well if you have done regular main.

those times are ok..

i was just wondering why you changed pullies.....the Cobra's came with different pullies from the factory. Anyways...i am in west palm....maybe we will meet up at the track sometime.

BTW...if it sees the track more than the highway.....Definately go with 3.73 gears.

E & EZRIDIN, thanks again for the advice. I had just changed the oil a week ago & I put taylor spiro pro wires & new cap & rotor on about 15-20K miles ago. never changed the fuel pump tho, will do that very soon. i put bosch platinums on there & have read on this board that copper plugs are better performing, so I may just switch to them when I do the fuel pump. The gears should be in by end of month, & I may go with the 3.73's as this will be my weekend warrior starting by the end of month. Heck, our new Explorer has 3.73's in it, why not the Cobra??? I have an old Z car that will be my daily driver, so I wont worry about gas mileage in the Cobra. As for the pullies, I didnt realize the Cobra had diff ones than the GT, but these were diff diameter than stock, especially the crank, so maybe i gained a little bit there. EZRIDIN, we should def talk at the track sometime. Melbourne is trying to build one right now, but it's going slowly, although ground has been broken already. I cant wait, a track less than 5 miles from my house! Later!

Get a computer from an 89-93 GT and an aftermarket mass-air meter. This eliminates the off-idle hesitation and can really wake the cobra motor up powerwise.

red82gt, thanks for the advice, something i will talk about with my mechanic in the next couple of weeks. i hear the cobra motors really like to breathe more, so a new mass air meter makes sense to me! thanks!
E, I live up in Melbourne about 1 mile from I95, & it takes me about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to get to west palm. my schedule is booked thru the 2nd week of Aug, so we'll have to plan to meet down there sometime....I cant wait to get back to the track tho! Later!

Dude, I do have the extra 15 in. rims...hmmmm, can i slip a purchase of a couple drag radials past the wife??? Maybe big Frank @ Big Frank's Tires in Cocoa could hook me up with a deal! We need to get the GTP up to speed as well so we can have some fun around town with that too...Later!

v93:

Basically, I've got bolt-ons...

Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads, Steeda Cam (small), pulleys, gears (3.55's) full exhaust (no cats), GT-40 intake, 24 lbs injectors, Pro-M 75mm MAF, Accufab 65mm TB, alum. Driveshaft.

My heads are ported a bit much for a N/A 302, but I plan (hopefully soon!) on purchasing a ProCharger so I had them ported and lock-wired for that.
