Thumbs up Need Advice, Big Time... (Tires)

I'm about to purchase tires and I'm wandering if I should use 275/40*17 for my stock GT... the car has 8in wide wheels.

Some people say yah... but others say that I will get "crowning?" and that I will not gain on performance...

WHAT IS TRUE I NEED EXPERIENCE...

My car has stock 245/45/17...

and are the NITTO 555 any good? ... how about the Yokohama A520????

Get the Nitto's or BFG drag radials. I have BFG's on stock pony rims (255/60/16) and they work well - especially on the street.

Stick with the stock width, 275 maybe too much and I don't thing the extra traction would really be worth that much anyways.

I wouldn't put 275s on an 8" wheel. With the times you're running on 245s, don't mess up a good thing. For your 8"ers, 255s would be as big as I would go b/c 275s won't help performance.

one summer = 4 tires... it's a simple as that.

So I've been told stick to 245 rubber.

Any feed back on Nitto 555s? They run at $139 on Tires.com. Our Canadian price on those is closer to the equivalent of $200.

Why would bigger tires hurt? Its only more traction. SS's have 275s stock.;

Which I could shrink the videos a bit more... but there is no way right now.

Need the proper wheels to fit those 275. Technicaly they would fit... but I have been told that it would not help me gain speed and will definatly use them up faster.

Inflated to the proper pressure for the street, the tire will deform due to the narrow rim - the middle of the tire will bulge out and wear very quickly (also reducing your contact patch).
At the track this wouldn't matter with lower pressure, and you probably would go quicker, but overall it's not a good idea.

Skyman,

If he's running mid 13s (taking his word for it) on 245s, in a stock GT, I can't see it improving ANY in the quarter unless more mods or gear change. For reasons stated earlier such as tire bulge (not good on tire), b/c of such a large tire on an 8" rim,
I would at least get a bigger wheel first.

The main thing though is that that wide of a tire will hurt his trap speed. Especially if he's running 101 mph with the 245s.
Yeah, it's more traction on the launch, but after that, he's gonna have to pull them things down the track.

Just bought myself some 245/45/17... NITTO 555. Cost in USD is $560.00 + $90 Shipping to Canada. From the traction results I've seen I'm figure this should be good to pull me in the 13.6 pretty stable and might be able to get a 13.59.

With the crap goodyears right now I could only launch from 1200-1500rpm. And would always loose a bit spinning from first to second.

Any of you use the Nittos?

BTW, FoxBody, you don't have to take my word for it... just look at the quartermile video on my sig.

You're cool w/ me man. NOT saying you're lying it's just hard for me to believe mid 13s for a stock GT w/o inspecting the car and seeing it run in person (sorry to bring this up again). I guess it's something I just have to work on. Once again, I'm not saying you are lying.
