newer model gt kill

the other day on the freeway i came up behind a newer model (not sure of the year) mustang gt. the license plate said 2fast4u on it. he saw me come up behind him in his mirror and he punched it. i followed suit but got caught in some traffic. i caught back up with him and he started swirving in and out through traffic like a mad man. finally we got to a clearing an i ppulled up next to him. we punched it and he kept up with me for the first part. but then i hit 3rd and was gone. i slowed up to let himget next to me and i patted the door and held out 5 0.

EZRIDN 04-20-2002 11:20 AM

Sweet....what do you run at the track?

StoplightWarrior 04-20-2002 11:56 PM

Nope, I dont think so. I own both cars, and my GT is an automatic to boot. When the cobra had headers, pulleys, flows and a K&N filter and the GT had just pulleys and mufflers I raced the two cars against each other time and time again and the GT always stomped the cobra. It was close off the line, but then the GT would just walk the snake. The new GT's have 260hp and weigh 3300lbs. The cobra's have 240-250 and weigh 3500. I'm not calling straight BS on you, but I dont think the GT guy was giving it all he had, or it was a BONE stock automatic GT.

So, if it really happened, good kill, but I don't think it was a legit victory.

Lizard King 04-21-2002 01:20 AM

Smell a load of crap.

True. I was thinking the same thing. Your cobra is slightly slower on the quarter (stock for stock) than a new GT.

Would you guys quit? I have an 87GT that takes LS1's and I had a 2001GT, which the 87 pulled hard, and I now have a 2002 GT.

Some cars run harder than others, and the Cobra and the GT are less than a 1/2 sec apart. That Cobra weighs more like 3400lbs btw, and with a couple little changes, it will smoke a new GT.

EEC Tuner and an off road H, exhuast, and gears is likely to have that Cobra running low 13's. The Cobra's engine is basically a 300hp+ engine with a crappy computer. If you were to swap the cam and add a 65mm T/B you'd have the basis for a 320hp engine with strong low end, and a hard core midrange.

So you think with just a cam I could put my cobra at 320hp? I doubt it would be quite that quick. You gotta think that a GT with a cobra intake and GT40 heads will make more than 250hp, so therefore its obvious the cobra's have a lot of untapped potential. Even with all the mods I've got now, the cobra is not that quick. Havent taken it to the track yet, but I would doubt it would run better than a 13.8. I just don't see a stock 94-95 cobra taking even a stock 99+ GT (manual).

Actually unit makes a good point. Those Cobras are choked by something like 6 cats ... if you take em out and do some exaust work, they can be pretty sick. This guy around Ottawa runs a black 95 Cobra at a best of 13.4 on street tires with exaust well done.

I have run him on the street multiple times and he seems to have some nice top end power (4000-7000RPM). Pulls very hard in third!

Unit's point may be a good one, but this guy's cobra is stock, don't forget.

Also, I have done up all my exhaust, and no way I'm running 13.4's!!!

Unit 5302 04-22-2002 12:21 AM

Saleen GTS dynoed 260rwhp with his Cobra, and all he had done was full Bassani exhaust with long tubes.

Getting an EEC tuner would most likely wake that car up BIG time. Most people see a 2-3 tenth gain by swapping computers. The Cobra's stock computer is the weakest of all the 5.0's. The Cobra cam isn't too bad, if you were driving an automatic car. That being said, a high LSA and low duration doesn't make for the best cam on a high po combo. Since you car comes with 1.7 roller rockers from the factory, a bump to say a Steeda #19 cam would get that Cobra really working.

The Steeda #19 cam has a LSA of 115 I think, but a much more advantageous 220/226 duration at .050 lift. With a .480/.480 lift on 1.6:1 roller rockers, you're looking at a total lift of .514/.514. Within acceptable limits of the GT40 valvetrain.

Unit 5302 04-22-2002 12:24 AM

By the way, the Cobra needs gears too. :D

As far as the 6 cats deal, I think that was only on the 96+ Cobras with the 4.6L, but none of the 5.0's got real good exhaust.

Unit 5302 04-22-2002 12:28 AM

His signature said "mostly stock" That could mean gears for all I know?

Lizard King 04-22-2002 12:30 AM

Could be my mistake then. I know for a fact he was running the 4.6L not a 5.0.

The 4.6 cobras were rated 305hp. The 5.0's, ~250hp. A 4.6 cobra with exhaust should be running mid 13's.

Also, Unit I'm actually trying to decide right now between either going with a cam (crane 2031 or steeda's) and a computer, or just going with an A-trim blower. I love the blower sound and the nice boost feeling, but I wonder which combo will cause less problems. Any advice?

Skyman 04-22-2002 02:38 PM

This is for the cobra? Well your not lookin at the same price. The blower will cost you a bit more, and remember your going to need to get it tuned, and beef up your fuel system a bit.

How fast do you want to go?

Id slap around a 282 duraiton .498 lift (Ecam) In that thing, put a TB on it, do the exhaust and get a real computer. You will have a strong 13second car then.

Unit 5302 04-24-2002 10:25 PM

Personally, I'd go with the EEC tuner, a C&L 76mm MAF, gears, and a mild cam. I think your heads would be okay with the Ecam at .530 lift because of your 1.7:1 rockers, but I really like the Steeda grind too. The Steeda cam has a lot more LSA than the E303, and that's good for torque production on a heavy car.

I'd polish up on what the Cobra already started with. The gears you need for sure, and that would be the next thing I would change.

There is no reason you shouldn't be able to get that car into the really low 13's/high 12's with what I've suggested, and maybe a couple little tricks.

StoplightWarrior 04-24-2002 11:11 PM

Unit, you've been a lot of help. Do you know how much my cobra weighs? Thanks again.

Unit 5302 04-25-2002 09:46 PM

I think the listed curb weight on your Cobra is about 3,400lbs.

There are definately some SN95 Cobra guys who know their stuff on the board. A lot of them really fall in love with their car after they get rid of the crap Ford did to detune them from the factory. ;)

Coupe5oh 04-28-2002 07:40 PM

Hey unit

Unit, you mentioned putting a 65mm tb on a cobra, didnt they come stock with 65mm?

Unit 5302 04-28-2002 08:59 PM

1993 Cobra's had the 65mm T/B stock, which was what the Cobra intake manifold was really setup to work with, but in 1994-1995 the Cobra got the 60mm GT piece.

Coupe5oh 04-29-2002 07:16 PM

wowo, i did not know that, thanx for the info, i guess i thought the 94-95 were like the 93 as far as stock pieces.
