Default Novi 1000 track times

I went to Ubly Dragway today to test out the new blower. The temp was pretty hot, around 85+ degrees.

First pass I launched at 4000 rpm and spun like crazy. Then above 5000 rpm it started to break up pretty bad. I went 11.90 @ 123.4 with a 1.99 60 ft.
Next pass I tried a leaner setting in my chip, and it broke up even worse. I had to shift @ 4800, and ran 11.65 @ 120.5

I checked my plugs and they looked pure white.
The gap was also @ .040. I regapped them all to .035, and cranked up the base fuel pressure from 42 @ WOT to 50 psi.

I launch again, and it pulls hard to 6000 rpm with no miss at all. Then I try to powershift 3rd, and MISS!!! DAMN!!! I started to abort the run, the said "FUGGIT!" and jammed it back into 3rd.

I went 12.0 @ 120. I think with a clean shift it would have been a 125 mph pass. I also was only seeing 7 psi down the track. On the street last night and this morning I saw 9-10 psi. But the air temp was in the 50's and not the upper 80's that I ran in at the track.

Now to get it tuned on a dyno, and throw the dry shot on it!

The lil' Novi seems to be a pretty nice blower, but the 1800 bucks I paid for it was not the end. I got rid of the FMU and went with 36 pound injectors. Those cost around $300.00, then it would not idle for crap until I added a bypass valve. Also the plastic discharge tube that came with the kit is junk. I had to make one from 3" mandrel bent exhaust tubing, and tap a hole for the bypass.

Not to mention the 300.00 chip.

Sky, if you want that 110 mph trap, just make a pass on radials. You'll probably go low 13's/high 12's, but you will probably get that mph with a little spinning-street tire slingshot action!

After you get a dyno tune and a small dry shot 10's should be in the bag.....

Excellent mph.

Can't even imagine what 120mph+ traps must feel like!! Good stuff!

Those are some killer trap speeds. Sounds like the blower wasn't that simple of a bolt-on with your combo. I was thinking of an a-trim or novi-1000, but I wasn't planning on dropping close another $1,000 on top of the kit cost.

Default what's up

How's it going exgmguy. I was next to you at the track. When I sprayed my car I went 10.27 @ 131 with only a 1.53 60'. My car was running terrible. It usually runs 11.0x -11.1x consistently (on motor, hadn't sprayed it until last sat.), but I think something was really wrong. Motor passes were only 11.8x one at 111 and the other at 115. I usually trap anywhere from 120-124 on motor. I ended up blowing a head gasket on the 10.27.

When is the next time you are going to the track? I ordered a new Cobra and it should be here in Sept., so I will be going to the track with that a bunch if I hurt the 89 worse than just a head gasket. I had water in cylinders 2,3,and 4 (pretty scary).

Damn, blown head gasket. That really sucks. I know the heat that day was pretty bad, but if you were running that far off on motor maybe something was already on it's way out?
I noticed you were smoking at the end of the track on your first pass.

I have some work to do before going back to the track, but I will definitely be ready by September. The air should be good then too. I have an appointment next week for a dyno/chip tune at Speedworks, and I am putting the hose on it too before then. I am hoping with a good tune and a 50 shot I can get close to a 125-130 trap, and a solid 10 second e.t. if the track hooks.
It was pretty gooey on Saturday I assume from the heat. I normally 60 ft in the 1.5's and yank both tires. That was with the spray before, and nitrous is harder to leave on than boost in my opinion.

Lemme know when you want to go again.

Rob Shackleton

BTW, sorry again to hear about the car getting ripped off, but there is nothing like a new Cobra to help you get over it.

Exgmguy, I have a couple ?'s for you about the novi 1000. I have been beating myself up over weather to get a NX kit or a novi 1000 the novi would mean I would have to wait another month or two (no big deal when I have waited this long). Though I am on the verge of ordering my NX kit probably the end of next week, but I keep having thoughts about the Novi 1000 kit. How big of a shot of Nitrous were you running before the 1000? And how close did the MPH vary between the two. Also from what you said it looks like a novi 1000 would actually cost me around 2600 ready to go (also was the custom chip required because of driveability or did you just do it in a quest for power). Also are you using the stock pullies that came with the blower? Is there anything else I should know as I finalize my decision? Thanks.

I was worried about slowing down with the blower at first. A few people told me that I had to run around 14 psi to match the 150 shot I was running. We'll all my previous N2O passes were in cool 70 degree weather, and my untuned blower showing about 7 psi still trapped the same speed.

You may not need a custom chip, and you could keep your injectors and run the FMU that comes in the kit. That could save a lot of money, or at least you could still drive it, and do those other things later. I have different pulleys as well. I had ASP make me a smaller blower pulley (2.75 vs. stock 3.0") and I used a crank pulley from a Grand Marquis (free from junkyard or 22.00 from Ford dealer) Crank pulleys from an F150, or a Crown Vic will do to. The stock 5.0l Mustang pulley is 6", and the one I have is 6.75".

I saw 5-6 psi with all the stock pulleys, then added the smaller blower pulley and saw solid 7 psi, the added the crank pulley and saw 10 psi. I was only getting 7 psi at the track due to the heat (90 degrees) or so I thought. Yesterday it would only make 5 psi. New belts stretch alot, and I think the belt was slipping at the track more than the heat killing my boost.

After spraying for 3 years, I would definitely vote for the blower. The power is always there. It cost me 45.00 to fill my bottle and I get 4 good passes out of it. That is 10 bucks EVERY PASS DOWN THE TRACK! I will now keep the dry kit, but jet it down just for "insurance".

The instructions do suck for the Novi, so if you happen to get one and need some advise on the install, give me a shout.
