![]() Cruising down the beltway feeder roads in Houston is my favorite place to look for races. Not too many places for police to hide and good wide lanes for long stretches with a few lights where you can line up. Today I saw a red Porsche 911 vert. When I came up on him a the the light I saw that it was a Carrera. It was not new, I'm guessing 8-10 years old, and slightly dirty. There were two college aged guys in it and we were next to each other at a red light. I just couldn't resist it. I gave a long hard rev and they looked over kind of suprised. He reved back not once but 2 or 3 times. I was so hyped I was about to go in my pants. I'd wanted to run a 911 for along time now but could never get amyone interested.
I left as hard as my car will at the green light and after a few seconds looked in the rear view. It appeared as if the guy didn't go at all. WTF. I just let off and what did he do but a fly by getting maybe 6-7 cars ahead. There was lots of room ahead so I floored it and caught him at 90 mph. Both had to let off due to traffic ahead. The passenger pointed ahead with his index finger so I knew it wasn't over. When we got through the traffic there was lots of room ahead. I was ahead of him and just waited at 40 mmh. He came up fast, I dropped to 2nd in the C-4 and when he was beside me, I went. At 90 again I was at least 6-8 cars ahead. He came up again, gave a beep, beep and a thumbs up. I was happy to win but kind of sad that he was so slow. The only explanations I have are: 1.) It was old, maybe 10 years old. 2.) It was a vert. 3.) He had a passenger; I didn't. 4.) It may have not been in good shape or not good tune. The pop up headlights were stuck in the up position with out the lights on. That's my only clue here, leading me to believe it was not well maintained. I was definitely disappointed in the performance of that particular 911. I just thought they were all pretty fast. This one wasn't any faster than the new Boxter that I beat a while back. This Crerra couldn't have been more than a high 14's car. Any opinions on this, I would love to hear them. Maybe next time, I'll get a fast one to go (and get it handed tome too). Rev ------------------ '66 Coupe, 306, 300 HP, C-4, 13.97 e.t., 100.3 mph 1/4 mi. |
