Post Your Stock Track Times Here

Hey Mustang Owners

I was wondering if ANY of you have a 96-98 Cobra, and what it ran in the 1/4 mile stock. I was also wondering what rear end gear ratios come stock in Cobras.

I am considering a change of heart and selling my Z28 for a 96-98 Cobra. So if you could post your stock track times, that would be great.

Thanks,
Aaron

Well, I don't have a 96-98 cobra, I have a 00 GT. Selling your Z28 for a cobra would not be a bad idea. Off the showroom floor, the cobra's will run high 13's. With simple mods like gears, pulleys, exhaust, and sticky tires, the cobra's can dip well into the 12's. It's a great platform to work with, and the parts are relatively cheap to make it go REAL fast.

Thanks StoplightWarrior.

Thanks for clearing that up. I hardly know anything about mustangs, except that I smoke alot of the GT's. But Cobras always seem to be even with me when I race them, especially the new ones. That is the one thing I will miss with my Z, the speed. BUT the cobra seems to be more my style and appealing to me, and I want to make sure they have the speed to back up the bad ***** looks.

I was wondering if you or anybody out there knows the stock gear ratio in the cobra?

Also, could you make an estimate on prices for the parts you suggested. I am seriously thinking about givin up the fbody crew, and joining the Mustang/Cobra crowd. I love the sound of the 4.6.

Another thing, are headers just as hard to put on a Mustang as they are on a Camaro. Cause Install $$$ on Camaro header installs are expensive.

Thank you

exgmguy 03-06-2002 05:07 AM

Headers are a pain on the 32 valve motor. but you can go quite fast with the stock ones.

X-pipe= 200.00
Flowmaster cat back=250.00
4.10-4.30 gear= 500.00 installed
drag radials= 300.00
Larger mass air= 200.00
K&N= 50.00

A 4.6 Cobra can run mid to high 12's around 106-108 with only these parts.

Ackbar00 03-06-2002 01:55 PM

The 99 up Cobras have 3.27 gears in them
The 94-98 Cobras have 3.08 Gears? I Think

Not a big deal if you dont like the gear set, just get a 4.56 or something installed

Really?? You smoke the GT's? Are you talking about the 96-98 GT's or the new GT's? Cause I smoke LT1's regularly (well, not smoke em, but at least beat them). The 96-97 GT's only had 215hp, though! The new GT's have 260 vs your 285, but they are lighter and will generally give an LT1 Z a run stock for stock.

Also, don't worry, with the cobra and some gears, you will DEFINITELY have the speed to back up the looks. Good luck.

96-98 and 99 + 01 Cobras all have 3.27 gears.

The new GT's at the track only run like mid 14's everytime I go. I was runing high 13's stock, and with my current mods now I run low 13's.

There are some that beat me though, that are modded.

if you just want a change of pace, you can't go wrong with a cobra. why not wait a little longer and get the new cobra when it hits the showrooms?

97ballZ 03-06-2002 05:42 PM

I would love to buy a 2003 cobra

Except I sorta need a little extra dough for the $35 G's

:)

I can dream though, right ? ? ?

I love my 97 Cobra. Get people all the time saying how nice it looks !!! Nothing beats laying the top down and heading for the beach on a sunny day!!! :D

My 97 Cobra is not as fast as the new Camaros or Firebirds, but it is a vert and still stock.

If you are interested in Cobra, at a 94-96 will take some $$$$$$$$$$ to make competitive, the 97-98 will take $$$$ to make competitive, and the 99+ will take $ to make competitive.
Competitive being = or better compared to a new F-Body, my opinion.

For a 97-98 Cobra, around $1,500 should put you in the 12's, like exgmguy said. If you really want some speed, invest in a vortech. The modular engines love the high RPM's. You might want to check EBAY. I saw a couple of supercharged Cobras for sale there.

I recently ran a stock 99 GT hardtop in the 1/8 mile. He won the first race and I won the second. (First time at the track for both of us). Had trouble hooking, it felt like I spun the whole way down the track. Anyway, I hit the 1/8 mile trap in second gear :D :D

96+ cobras 3.27 gears

99+ GT's and cobras 3.27's

Yep i know of a street driven 97 cobra vertible with 4.56 grs, has gone 12.50's with e.t drags, has 31 spline axles cuz he shattered his stock ones, and the guy tries to race me at the street races? and lies saying he runs 14's no no.....

Just to set the record straight, aren't the '97 Z-28's LS1's , rather than the LT1's with 285 Hp? Shouldn't it be more like the under rated 310 Hp versions?

I used to live in Elgin, and considering I never got beat by a Camaro in 15 years, a Mustang would be a wise choice.:D

nope, 98+ ls1's

Backing up Rob on his claim, I have personally witnessed that. My buddy with a 98 Cobra installed pullies, a FULL Bassani exhaust, filter, and 4.10's. He ran a 12.8 @ 108 on street E/T's. No too bad. That car pulls very hard above 3500, especially with those gears.

He also ran a 13.6@105 bone sock.

Other than that, I haven't yet seen another Cobra run better than a 13.8@100-103 at the track.

Rev 03-09-2002 06:21 PM

Yup, you're right. Corvettes had LS-1's in '97 but Camaros didn't have'em until '98. Thanks for the info.
