gearing?

ok i have a 89 GT and i want to put new rear end gears in it. i have a Auto with a shift kit and have heard many say 3.73's are the best for an auto. i do as much highway driving as i do street driving, so i don't want to over rev the engine at fast speeds, would 3.55's be better? i do want a quicker launch cause these 2.73's arn't cutting it when i street race! other cars usually get a jump on me off the line. my car just doesn't feel powerfull when i start. if i leave my car in 1st and shift it myself i feel way more power once i hit above 3500 rpm's, would a stall converter be to my advantage? any input would be great!!!

With that auto, the smallest gear I would get would be a 3:73. They are pretty good for road driving. If it was me, I would go with a 4:10. Good Luck

I'd probably go with 4:10's too. Although if it's your only street car you might want to stay with 3:73's. After all, gas is getting up there in price. A stall converter would be a big advantage. You can't go too big on the street cause you'll cook your tranny, but you could probably get away with a 10" or 10 1/2" converter. I have a 9" converter in my 65 stang and it's a bit much for the street. Converters work better with slicks. You can foot brake it or flash the converter to launch your car. Since I assume you have street tires, flashing the converter would probably just make you go up in smoke. Still, with a little practice, you could probably launch your stang at around 2600-2700 Rpm on the brakes. You'd just have to ease it out of the hole. At the track with slicks, a converter with gears would probably shave about 7 tenths off your E.T.

STOP WHERE YOU ARE!
How can you people even considder 4.10!
I have 4.11 in my 70 coronet 383 and I tell you, I can never take that thing out of the city! Granted, it will smoke em for a block but the trade off is way too great.

I too am looking for gears for my 88 LX 5.0 but my toss up is between the 3.55 and 3.73.
With the T-5, 3.73 may be tollerable, I just don't know.
(my dimes worth)

Hey Nitro, I believe we're talking overdrive on this one. On the '70 Coronet or my '66 Stang we don't want 4.10's for street driving. With .67 OD that makes like a 2.70 on the highway. Just a thought.
