Post raced a 94+ Cobra and 65+ coupe

On the way home, I came across a 94+ Cobra. It had the vertical rear lights, but it sounded like a Windsor engine. In any case, I finally lined up next to him at a two-lane left-turn. I was on the right, and the road we were turning onto said "left lane ends, merge left". We took off, and as he had the inside lane, he got ahead until the straightaway, where I started reeling him in like a fish. I got to his front fender, but unfortunately my lane ended almost immediately, about 3 seconds too soon. So you could say he won. At least it was a Mustang.

A few minutes later, I saw a lowered, wide-tired 65-66 coupe. After various acrobatics, I also lined up at a stop light with him. I don't know what he had, but it souned like a healthy V8, probably a 302. I ate him up, I almost felt bad doing it.

I find myself sometimes taking surface streets instead of the freeway just in the hopes of getting a race, it's like a drug.

You have a stroked 427 in that thing with a T-56? It must run good. What other mods do you have? Do you know how much power its making or have you been to the track?

And why do you have 3.08's with a T-56? Also how do you hook with only 225 tires with 427 torque?!

It runs well, I'm happy with it. It's just a CHP crate motor. I have 225s because they rub if they're any bigger. I have 3.08's because I can't get traction otherwise. When I first built it, it had 245s and 3.70s, and would go sideways in 3rd gear. Criminey! Now with the 3.08s and 225 drag radials, I usually get traction in 2nd.

I also redid the suspension (what they call the Shelby mod) and put front discs. I had read discs, but it made the wheels stick out too much (and therefore rub) so now it's rear drums.

It's blue on the outside and white inside; I kept the interior stock, with a groovy wide-sweep speedo and a big white factory steering wheel. I put three-point seat belts in front and lap belts in the rear. Restomod is fun.

Sounds like a cool setup. Get it to the track and see what it runs. How much did it all cost you?

I have to disagree with what you did there though. I would go with a 3.73 or 3.55 gear atleast with that T-56, then just do the necessary things to get more traction. Get some slicks for the track. W/ traction I bet that 427 could pull the tires.

Thanks for your advice. It cost about $15k; that includes a 7k engine, a 1k paint job (you know where my priorities are), and a few k to a friend to restore it and put it together.

It's primarily a street car, so I set it up for traction with street tires. Besides, with that much displacement and torque, its powerband is wide enough that I may run slower if I have to stir the stifter like a blender. I'm running through the gears almost as fast as I can as it is.

I would like to dyno it, but I'd probably just embarrass myself at the strip. Besides, for some unknown reason the bay area, like LA, has no local drag strip.

Actually you have a couple of local drag strips up there, I used to live there. What city are you in? I have a few friends w/ stangs up there that'd be happy to go w/ you too. Can't get embarassed its all fun.
