Talking Riding Shotgun in my Buddy's SVT Contour with Vortech SQ

We were driving around Huntington Beach, CA, beating up on all the ricers that wanted to run. With the Vortech SQ in my friend's Contour making 290 hp at the wheels, the rice boys never knew what hit 'em

Man, I was laughting so much, I was having just as much fun as I have in my 5.0. I mean, imagine a little Contour handing it to the rice crowd. It was hysterical!

How much tq does that thing make? How much hp/tq do the contours have stock? That would be a badA&& little sleeper. Taken it to the track yet?

Actually that kit brings the hp up to 290-300 at the engine and only 215-220 lb-ft of torque. I know someone that just had the V9 F-trim installed. It is definitely a sleeper. Stock they make 200 hp.

Actually, the exact numbers are 288 hp and 235 ft. lb. torque at the front wheels and not the engine. You see, the SHO Shop dyno tuned it and increased the boost to 10 1bs. I saw a printout of the dyno runs, and before the tuning and boost increase, it was making 255 hp at the wheels.

In my opinion, I think that with a compression ratio of 10:1, the motor's on the edge for 10 lbs. boost. When the blower/engine heats up from idling or traffic, the engine will detonate a little under boost. Not good for the hypereutectic pistons. It needs to go back for more tuning.

Regarding track times, it's going to be magazine tested in the next couple of months so we should know soon. Vortech is coordinating the testing - they used his car for the development work. If your curious there's a pic of his car on the Vortech website.

Did we spank the ricers badly? Yes, but only against the civics and integras. We didn't come across any RX7's, Supras, 3000GTs, or Z cars. If we had, it would have been a lot closer.

i test drove a '98 SE 5spd contour... i wasn't impressed with the performance. I was actually expecting the 2.5 V6 to run BETTER then my mother's '93 SHO auto... but in fact it ran worse! I expected that cause it is a smaller car with a 5spd... i was sadly disappointed... however, the car is for sale at 9K and only have 50k miles on it... red 4dr... moon roof... power window/locks remote unlocking... is the car worth 9K??

10 psi with 10:1 compression? The engine is not going to make to the summer if he beats it too much. The ring lands are going to snap right off. 288 & 235 are nice numbers though. They definitely tuned it too agressive for those internals. Hope it doesn't blow during the write-up.

Sky - Powertrain Dynamics in Huntington Beach is very highly recommended by everyone I know. Powertrain does a lot of tuning for a many of the car magazines. The dyno tuning cost is around $400, but these guys are really worth it. I'll be taking my ride there in the next few months.

SMOKE - Vortech did the install. They had my friend's car for quite a while .

EXAM99 - Yep, I'm worried it will blow up also. The hyper pistons just aren't going to take it for too long. I told my friend to look into the J&S electronics timing retard module, which listens for detonation and automatically retards timing. Costs $500 but is a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild.

Beef - yeah, it's a blast. It's a good daily driver and it handles awesome. My buddy takes it to open track (road race) events all the time. Sometimes I even get to run it.

MercDude - The SVTs are faster and handle a lot better than the SEs. If you like performance (and I know you do ), you can pick up a used SVT Contour for a little more coin.
