Angry Fuel pump blues

I need help, I am having fuel pump problems.
Every once in a while when I will go out to start my car (1988 Lx 5.0) it want start, the fuel pump will not come on.The pump relay will click but no pump. Then I will try to start it later and it will start. No one can figure it out cause we can only diagnose the problem when the pump doesn't come on, but when I get it to a mechanic the car starts and I look like an *** .I was wondering if anyone has had fuel pump problems like I do. Please help

I would suggest two things. First, check for codes from the EEC, and two, replace your fuel filter. That could be your problem.

Before you replace the pump make sure go through all your fuel circuit connections. It may just be a bad ground or a connector pin not making good contact. If you are close to some tools when this happens, ( maybe carry a multi-meter in your car with you )check to see if there is power coming out of your relay. Its a good place to start.

LIL G.U.
Im had the same problem a while back a couple times. It hasnt happened for a while. But i replaced the fuel filter just in case. I ran the eec codes and got back error code 96( the high speed fuel pump relay is open)/95(you have a fuel pump secondary circuit fault)when the pump wouldnt turn on. If you get a code 96 change the relay under the drivers seat.

Also when you do get the car to run how does it run???

Same thing happened to me. First I checked all the electrical connections and made sure I was getting juice. I was getting power, so I ended up putting in a new 190lph holley fuel pump. That fixed the problem. I took the old fuel pump out, which was a stock replacement made by carter that was only 2 years old, and put some juice through it and it was stuck. It finally unstuck on the fourth try.

Long story short, if you are getting juice and the filter is not clogged, replace the pump. Seeing as your car is an 88, it is probably a good idea anyway.

MTU50,

I was told that the high speed fuel pump relay is under the seat. Is it under the seat under the carpet. Or under the seat above the carpet?
