RX7 Goes down...

Well I went out last night to go to a Toronto Mustang Cruise, but my dam wife was late with my car so I missed it  . But I still went out after. The air very cool, my car was going like a bat out of hell. To the point were I was having traction problems. I did get me a decent race (sort of).

A blue late 80's, early 90's RX7 cut me off last night. He wasn't really riced out, he just had fart can exhaust. It wasn't even loud fart can exhaust. This scares me sometimes, cause the guy might be a real performance guy and not some crack smoking ricer.

We went from about a 50 mph roll. I pulled him pretty good. Gained a car length about every 2-3 seconds. All the way up to about 100 mph, he just got further and further behind.

We then came to a light. I knew that I was faster because of the last little go, but I was having so much traction issues, and he is a lot lighter than me, I thought he could take me for a bit. Nope. Killed him even worse. I got up to about 70-80 and it was all over. buddy stayed behind me and took the first exit he could.

Whoopin' it up on the old rotary engine! Nice :)

At least he wasn't all riced out.

Was it a Turbo II or NA? What mods do you have?

Not sure what was done to it. Didn't hear any turbo spooling, but there was no badges on it.

I have:

3.73's
Superchip
O/R H-pipe
Dynomax Catback
75 mm MAF
K&N

Shelby428cj 09-12-2002 10:55 AM

Heehee Good kill Cam!!!

See Ya,
Karen:cool:

Well the NA's are PIGS, especially from a start. The Turbo II from that gen werent too bad but a well driven stock 5.0 can still take one out. If you beat it pretty bad then it was probably a NA version. Either way good kill and nice mods.

Thanks

Any pics of the 94?

*Steeda90GT* 09-12-2002 12:16 PM

No pics, but if you can picture it it's a Oxford white 94 GT with grey cloth interior....flawless inside and out. It's in like show room condition. It also looks 100% stock with stock tri bar 17 " wheels, no tint, etc.. The car runs 12s@108mph. It's a true sleeper.

Hyper92GT 09-12-2002 12:30 PM

hey, 95mustanggt, not sure if you are a member or aware of the GTAMC, we are heading out to TMP (Cayuga) on Friday night for a Fbody vs Stang night.
Are you going or interested.

Sounds like I could post a pic of my car and even you an I would have a hard time telling them apart, until you popped the hood ;) :D

Hey Hyper, ya I'm a new member to the GTAMC, I was trying to get to one of there "non offical" cruises last night when I had this race. Unfortunately I didn't get there until 9 pm and all that was there was a 94-98 saleen and a couple sharp looking foxs. There were also a bunch of ricers.

I don't even know were Cayuga is :o

But if I can talk the wife into it I might go. This week is pretty much the last week I get to drive me stang. I'm out of town pretty much the rest of the month and then I've got to switch to Ontario Plates (I have Alberta plates), which requires an emission test (which I definately won't pass :( ). Unless someone can help me go to a place that "assists" people in my situation ;).

Anyway, I'll see what happens (I guess I better check out the GTAMC board, eh?)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the turbo RX7's have a hood scoop and the NA's do not? I raced a riced out NA looking RX7 a while back, but I could hear his aftermarket turbo spool up. It was horrible off the line, but not bad up top. I took him pretty easily.

Yes they have the hood scoop and different exhaust. They also say Turbo II on the fender and rear hatch. They also come with 16" wheels. Also some lower end NA models are only 4 lug wheels.

The late 80s RX-7s are slow from what I have exprerienced. I went up against one at the track, and it was one of the loudest imports I have ever heard...

I was kind of nervous because I had no idea what he had.... I WAS nervous until he ran like a 17.7 :).

Thanks,
DoranW

17.7 ?

Dang, a 17.7, thats awful! That's about what a stock Miata runs.

I was at the 1/8th mile track this year and there was the latest gen RX7 running mid 10's! The guy did not know how to drive.

Rev 09-13-2002 05:13 PM

high 16's-mid 17's

So isn't that like high 16's-mid 17's in the 1320?

I used to have good friends who raced the 2nd gen RX7s. The NA(GLE) is a dog and has some decent upper speed. Then there is the 4lug NA SE which is even more of a pig. The turbo II is no slouch though. It will run mid-low 15s STOCK but has tremendous pull on the highway. They also respond very well to easy mods like any other turbo car does. My friends Turbo II with full exhaust, and intake just barely pulled on my friends all STOCK 88 LX Coupe. This was on the highway....60-120mph roll.

7up 09-16-2002 11:43 AM

I've heard tons of horror stories about the turbo RX7's reliability. Especially when you mod them, they seem to always be in the garage getting fixed. I drove a 93 RX7 at a dealer a couple years back, the car had 10k miles and was pooring blue white smoke out when it started and really hit it.

Steeda90gt, I am curious if your friend had problems with his?

They had TONS of problems with them, especially the turbo ones. They were spending every weekend trying to fix them, one of my friends went through thre computers....the computer cost him 1,000. Some of them purchased the low mile 3rd gen RX7s and the nightmare is still there.

95mustanggt 09-16-2002 02:41 PM

Aren't Imports supposed to me way more reliable than North American Cars?.... :D

*Steeda90GT* 09-16-2002 03:07 PM

lol, I love that one. Most people don't realize that the performance imports....especially the turbocharged ones arent nearly as reliable as american performance cars. And to top it off theyre worse on gas then most american cars. try getting good mileage out of a turbo eclipse or turbo RX7

95mustanggt 09-16-2002 03:30 PM

I know, fuel only contains so much energy. If you produce more power you need more fuel, no matter if you're a 4 cyl or 8.

Freakin Ricers...

*Steeda90GT* 09-16-2002 03:41 PM

Exactly, and when they get their hondas to go 12s, all of that "Honda Reliability" pretty much goes out the window. Plus they compare reliability with almost new imports to "their friends 13 yr old domestic"

inferno 09-16-2002 04:59 PM

The rotary engine has never been known for its reliability or gas mileage. Also, it takes a lot of attention to detail to properly built a rotory engine.

*Steeda90GT* 09-17-2002 07:29 AM

It's a shame that Mazda didnt make a bigger displacement rotary, that thing wouldve cooked. Do you know that originally Chevy was going to buy the rights for it and had plans to put it in the Vette.

jonnyk 09-17-2002 05:11 PM

Nice kill, Cam! Always fun to put them in their place.

Part of the reason that Chevy didn't do it was because they couldn't get the car to run properly. Also, in terms of displacement, Mazda did have a slightly bigger production motor in the 3 rotor 20b. No need to really increase the size and weight of the motor either when you can turbo charge it and keep a good weight distribution.

Good kill Cam, Im glad to see that your car is coming along well. A properly tuned turbo twin rotor can whoop some serious ***. But stock they really arent much to worry about. Id bet that your car would whoop on a stock 3rd gen turbo. My 95 did with about the same mods and a slipping clutch.

Im still thinking about getting a fox body. I just found out last week that the dealership I work for is shutting down for good so now I have to find a new job :( Its cool though, Im sure I will be back working somewhere else soon enough.......and I still have left over mustang parts lying around here. By the way I STILL have that damn 94-95 mac intake if you want it. I only used it for a week. 100 bucks and its yours.

I may be interested in the intake? How come you only used it for a week? Did it give any power improvement? Any pics?

SteedaGT, Surprisingly the induction was the LAST thing I ever did to my 95GT. I had everything listed on my signature on that car and was using the stock induction tubing with a drop in K&N filter. When I put on the Mac kit my custom chip didnt agree with the new air flow levels and the car wouldnt idle right. To get my cpu to accept the new induction I was going to have to get my chip re-burnt which is expensive. So I put the stock stuff back on and ended up selling the car a few days later.

I dont even think I used it for a week, probably about 3 days. I really liked it too. The whole car sounded different with it on, the throttle response increased very noticeably and you can really hear the system working. I dont have any pics because I dont have a scanner and really havent been trying to sell it. It looks just like all the pictures in the magazines and its in absolute perfect condition. It really looks like its never been used.
