Default RX7 Goes down...

Well I went out last night to go to a Toronto Mustang Cruise, but my dam wife was late with my car so I missed it . But I still went out after. The air very cool, my car was going like a bat out of hell. To the point were I was having traction problems. I did get me a decent race (sort of).

A blue late 80's, early 90's RX7 cut me off last night. He wasn't really riced out, he just had fart can exhaust. It wasn't even loud fart can exhaust. This scares me sometimes, cause the guy might be a real performance guy and not some crack smoking ricer.

We went from about a 50 mph roll. I pulled him pretty good. Gained a car length about every 2-3 seconds. All the way up to about 100 mph, he just got further and further behind.

We then came to a light. I knew that I was faster because of the last little go, but I was having so much traction issues, and he is a lot lighter than me, I thought he could take me for a bit. Nope. Killed him even worse. I got up to about 70-80 and it was all over. buddy stayed behind me and took the first exit he could.

Whoopin' it up on the old rotary engine! Nice

At least he wasn't all riced out.

Was it a Turbo II or NA? What mods do you have?

Not sure what was done to it. Didn't hear any turbo spooling, but there was no badges on it.

I have:

3.73's
Superchip
O/R H-pipe
Dynomax Catback
75 mm MAF
K&N

Well the NA's are PIGS, especially from a start. The Turbo II from that gen werent too bad but a well driven stock 5.0 can still take one out. If you beat it pretty bad then it was probably a NA version. Either way good kill and nice mods.

No pics, but if you can picture it it's a Oxford white 94 GT with grey cloth interior....flawless inside and out. It's in like show room condition. It also looks 100% stock with stock tri bar 17 " wheels, no tint, etc.. The car runs 12s@108mph. It's a true sleeper.

hey, 95mustanggt, not sure if you are a member or aware of the GTAMC, we are heading out to TMP (Cayuga) on Friday night for a Fbody vs Stang night.
Are you going or interested.

Sounds like I could post a pic of my car and even you an I would have a hard time telling them apart, until you popped the hood

Hey Hyper, ya I'm a new member to the GTAMC, I was trying to get to one of there "non offical" cruises last night when I had this race. Unfortunately I didn't get there until 9 pm and all that was there was a 94-98 saleen and a couple sharp looking foxs. There were also a bunch of ricers.

I don't even know were Cayuga is

But if I can talk the wife into it I might go. This week is pretty much the last week I get to drive me stang. I'm out of town pretty much the rest of the month and then I've got to switch to Ontario Plates (I have Alberta plates), which requires an emission test (which I definately won't pass ). Unless someone can help me go to a place that "assists" people in my situation .

Anyway, I'll see what happens (I guess I better check out the GTAMC board, eh?)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the turbo RX7's have a hood scoop and the NA's do not? I raced a riced out NA looking RX7 a while back, but I could hear his aftermarket turbo spool up. It was horrible off the line, but not bad up top. I took him pretty easily.

Yes they have the hood scoop and different exhaust. They also say Turbo II on the fender and rear hatch. They also come with 16" wheels. Also some lower end NA models are only 4 lug wheels.

The late 80s RX-7s are slow from what I have exprerienced. I went up against one at the track, and it was one of the loudest imports I have ever heard...

I was kind of nervous because I had no idea what he had.... I WAS nervous until he ran like a 17.7 .

Thanks,
DoranW

I was at the 1/8th mile track this year and there was the latest gen RX7 running mid 10's! The guy did not know how to drive.

Default high 16's-mid 17's

So isn't that like high 16's-mid 17's in the 1320?

I used to have good friends who raced the 2nd gen RX7s. The NA(GLE) is a dog and has some decent upper speed. Then there is the 4lug NA SE which is even more of a pig. The turbo II is no slouch though. It will run mid-low 15s STOCK but has tremendous pull on the highway. They also respond very well to easy mods like any other turbo car does. My friends Turbo II with full exhaust, and intake just barely pulled on my friends all STOCK 88 LX Coupe. This was on the highway....60-120mph roll.

I've heard tons of horror stories about the turbo RX7's reliability. Especially when you mod them, they seem to always be in the garage getting fixed. I drove a 93 RX7 at a dealer a couple years back, the car had 10k miles and was pooring blue white smoke out when it started and really hit it.

Steeda90gt, I am curious if your friend had problems with his?
