Post S2000 vs stangs 1 loss 1 win

Just finished break in on the S2000 and saturday night got to test the car out.

1st Race was with 302Crew's 87 LX w/ 306 (ran 13.4 on street tires): I lost from 40-50 mph roll ons (which I expected as his car hits 104-105 in the traps) Didn't get pulled as bad as I expected though (1-2 cars).

Next up was a 98 ish GT. I ran him down from behind first with him on it and passed him easily. I then proceeded to smoke him out of a light right after that. Just to top it off, he had CLEAR tail lights on the car.

My buddy has one too... sweet car BTW.

He was pulling 14.0 consistent... and one day decided to beat the car and got 13.7... hard on the clutch though.

Hey guys, I got a question. I have seen several times now that running fast quarters on the Honda S2000 is hard on the clutch. Why is this harder on an S2000 clutch than on a Mustang clutch? What kind of damage is done to the S2000 clutch?

The clutch has to be sliped.

See the S2000 is not so great on torque, so you have to bring the revs up and slip the clutch to make sure the tires grab..., if you dump the clutch the car goes no where (wheel spins)...

Actually in my experience with the S2000 it works best to slip the clutch real high in the rpms, dumping only spins the tires 6ft or so but then it bogs.

I raced my buddy's S2000, high speed on the 417 going to Montreal...

I was killing the guy on 4 the gear... I hit 220KM (125MPH), put in 5th, and he just zoomed by and kept on accelerating... that thing pulls insane high speed.

what exactly does it mean when you slip the clutch? In my mustang, I will rev to about 2.5k, let the clutch out fast, but not all the way, then lay on the gas pretty deep while I let out the clutch the rest of the way. It avoids wheelspin this way. Is this considered clutch slipping?

You sorta got it... if your car smells like burnt rubber (clutch burning) ... then your slipping.

If there is no walop on your take off and no wheel spin when you launch from 2500... you definatly got it.

Lizard King,

When you say that I got it, does that mean I am slipping the clutch? Is this something I shouldn't be doing? You launch at about 1500, dumping the clutch, right? Once again, sorry for all the stupid questions...but how else can I learn?

Yep, you're slipping the clutch bean. It's not really hard on the clutch unless you are doing it all the time or from higher rpms.

The S2000's clutch is slipped slowly from about 5,000rpm. Extremely hard on the disc. Plus the flywheel will undoubtedly overheat under that situations creating glazed over "hot spots" which will reduce the clutch's future gripping ability. Every one of those slips takes hundreds of miles (if not thousands) off the disc life.

Slipping it lightly out from 2500 isn't that bad.

When Lizard says he's dropping the clutch at 1,500, it just means he revs to 1,500 and abruptly pulls his foot all the way off.

Dumping is hard on the drivetrain, slipping is hard on the clutch. Dumping is probably the more consistant method on the same track, slipping is probably more consistant on different surfaces because you have more control to keep the wheels from spinning.

thank you Unit and Lizard, great info. Throughout the course of every day driving, I never dump the clutch. Usually I just ease it out at around 1200 or so RPMs. Does this mean that I am slipping it every time I take off? I've only smelled burning clutch twice, both times were when I punched it in reverse...I know I was slipping it badly then.

Technically speaking the clutch is always slipping a tiny bit from any launch... The engine runs and the transmission has to connect to it through the clutch from a dead stop.

Check out this video... That is a (near) perfect launch in a 2000GT (stock).

I love your videos, Lizard! You seem to love bouncing it off that rev limiter. My 2000 GT is the same color as yours, too.
