I was riding with a friend in his Cobra, with his newly installed 4.30 gears.
We were cruising along when he commented that there was a TA a little ways back. We slowed up a bit, waiting for the TA to catch up. Just before the TA passed, we punched it and watched as the he flew past us. Argh!
However, I knew the reason: the TA already had 5-10 mph on us when we both punched it. Now, normally I have horrible luck. Today, however, was different (must be my friend's luck!), because as we rounded the corner we spotted the TA next to a Corvette at the next light, and wouldn't you know it there was a lane available.
We pulled up to the light: Corvette, Trans Am, and Cobra all gleaming in the afternoon sunlight. I looked over at the Trans Am driver, to be greeted instead by his girlfriend in the passenger seat with a "What, you want to try AGAIN?" look on her face.
The cross lights turned yellow and the rpms creeped up a tad... Green! Both cars paused waiting to see if the other was going to try, and within a second both engines were screaming. Only this time, I had to crane my neck to look out the back window at the TA, who fell back 1.5-2 carlengths and couldn't make up the ground. Score!
We hit the brakes at ~110, and flipped a u-turn to head back the way we were supposed to go.
Score for that day: 3-0 (two TAs and a GT)
