Ever seen a Chevy 454 SS Truck?
After working on my car for a bit today, I decided to go take a drive and test out my new JMS chip. (well it needs some tuning). Anyway, I see this full-sized, black Chevy truck behind me trying to catch up. I move over a lane and he pulls up. As soon as we a nose to nose, he nails it and jumps about 2 feet ahead. I was in 3rd going like 50, so I just nailed it and instantly got a car length. There was traffic ahead so we slowed down.
A bit later I got to see the markings on the side of the truck.... it read "454 SS" in red lettering. I have only heard of these trucks, and never actually seen one. At the next light, I'm behind him, and he lights up the tires when the light goes green. Only there is a car in front of him..... so he couldn't go far. At the next light we are in front, talking to each other.... And its a stock 454....of course we was interested in what I had, and he told me that I had a REALLY fast car. On green we both nail it. Only he doesn't chrip the tires, but still launches hard. I, however, completely light them up through 1st, screeching and smoken, hit second, the DR's grab and I'm off..... I look back and he's WAY back there.... Anyone seen one? Do you know what they run? I've heard 13's but I'm not sure. However someone on another board said they have seen them run 12.9s STOCK. ------------------ 1994 Mustang Cobra 308ci, Vortech S-trim 11#, ported GT-40 heads, E-303 cam, FMS 1 5/8 headers, BBK Offroad H-pipe, 2-chamber flows, and several other goodies. They aren't much from the factory even with the 454 engine they only made 235 HP and 385 torque , used a 3 speed auto tranny with 3.73 gears, only would get 12-14 mpg and they ran mid to high 15's in 1/4. They had to move close to 5000 lbs. Was mostly an appearence package although with some work could make some good hp, it just that weight that kills them and also no weight on real tires.

yeah, those are dogs for what they have...GM produces them to compete with the 93 Lightning, and it hardly did that...mostly 15.5-15.8's around 85-88

Checked an old issue of Car and Driver - the SS 454 ran 15.75 @ 92 mph in the quarter. They made real good low end grunt, but ran out of breath real early

Seen many of these, and raced a few also when I had my 95 Lightning. Stock, they were right on with the Lightning, but Car and Driver gave the overall package to Ford. 454 and Lightnings numbers were unbelievably close in all areas including braking, 0-60, HP, and 1/4 mile. They are by no means a 13 second or even 14 second truck from the factory. 15.-15.5 is more reasonable.

I raced one a couple times in a row from a stop with my old '88GT stock with 2.73's and the T-5.
0-20 it was pretty close, then I hit my powerband and he began to drop back like he was in reverse. After I got into 2nd it was a joke. |

I've always wanted a 454 chevy stick shift though. I've only seen 2 like that. One was for sell but was kinda of shitty. The other is a guys from around here. Real nice one runs low 13's. He's modded it pretty well. A bottle of the giggles just to top it off. Doesn't race it much. He hit 13's with 18 inch rims and low profile tires. Great paint job nothing like the sound of a big block with flows and headers.

There's a young kid around my area with one of those. I'm not sure if it's a stick or auto, never paid attention to it. I've only raced him once, and smoked him quite bad.
I figured with a 454 it'd be an "old-school" type that would be pretty fast, but I found out that SS in that case meant super slow. I'd imagine that if it were setup properly it would haul some serious a$$. |

I remember posting o a topic that was about the "calvin pissing" stickers, and i posted how one of those SS454 trucks had one, but it was a huge one that took up most of the back window.
my car was stock 14.7-9 at best, but i knew i was going to show this guy tailights no matter what, so i did, he didnt spin that bad, but we got on the highway and he stayed pretty good, but not good enough. ------------------ 90 lx coupe: Mac cold air fenderwell, accel supercoil, advncd ignition,3-core radiatr, FMS alum D/S, Black magic fan, 3.27grs, 3chbr flows. I've seen them in my rearview mirror! The best part is that 90% of the owners of ss454's think that a station wagon 454 means the truck is way faster than any 302/351 that is until they race one.

Well I have saw one run at the track (Bristol Dragway) and it ran 16 something. That sucks for all the rumors that went around about them.
