Post Lost To a 98 Cobra!!

Tonnight i ran my friends 94-98 style Cobra. He just has the basic mods, K&N, headers, Exhaust. He beat me by about half a ca length, granted we were dead even after the launch, but i thought i would destroy this car...whats wrong??

I have some valve train ticking and my timing may not be exactly @ 14 deg. anymore. Any one have any input??

well, first off, what year was his Cobra? 94-95 were 240HP 5.0's, then the 96-98's were the 305HP DOHC 4.6's.

What does your car run at the track SR89S? That should tell you how well you might do against 4.6 Cobras. They're not all the sme though.

Streetracin89Stang, you need a GT40 or Cobra intake (port the lower), 65mm TB and some 3.73 gears. Get some BFG or Nitto drag radials too. That Cobra is making at least 250-260 hp at the rear wheels stock and probably 270-280 hp with it's mods. Good Luck!

Dude my 97 vert is stock except for K&N and I ran a buddy from work in his 91 GT with 3.55s and h-pipe and I walked him like he was standing still(from a roll). I did the same to another 5.0 a few days before that. The Cobras do pretty well. I would expect him to beat you with that light of mods. With headers and h-pipe I'm surprised it was that close.

As far as the timeing goes this may sound nuts but it would help if you advanced some more when I bought my car it hade most of its current mods already on it and the timeing was at 22, the ticking could be that you need a oil change or higher weight oil, or even a rod

I do have 3.73's and i am sure that i will beat him when i adjust my timing tomorrow. I dont really know what i run considering the nearest track is about 2 hours from me :-( What kinnd of pwer do you think i am making, hopefully at least 280, including the little things like pullies, cold air etc. That port and polish alone should give some decent power, and yes a upper and lower intake is on the list, lol.

The ticking noise is from the valve train but i have just put in all new lifters, rods, and rocker arms. I have heard that a cam change in conjusntion with valve job/s can cause the rods to be a little short so i am going to have a machine shop make me a custom set about .015 longer than stock to stop the ticking valves, sound right??

I think 280HP is a bit optimistic. I'd say more along the lines of 250-255 peak HP.

Are we talking flywheel HP or at the wheels? If it's at the wheels, I think 280 is optimistic. 280-300 at the flywheel may be about right.

Well i raced him again yesterday after i set my timing and the steets were damp (not wet) from it raining earlier and so we lined up an di spun through first and secone and finally caught at about 4000 in second and slammed it into third and ended up beating him by about at car and a half when we let off at the end of third. I heard him scream cop as we slowed so i just hit it around a corner and away. So im happy with the way im running i guess.....(always need to be faster)

I am thinking about some 245 Nitto555's next to replace the shitty 225ZR's that i have on there right now. How big will the well on the 89 let me go as far as width goes?

You should be able to run a 28x10 slick on a 15x8 rim. So Nitto 245's with the Pony 16" rims should be no problem. If they do rub, unbolt the quad shocks.

One more thing, StreetRacin89. Control arms, control arms, control arms! Reinforce the torque boxes too and if the subframe connectors aren't the weld-in type, weld them in!

I've got 265s on welds that fit ok, but I had to remove the quads. 245s on the rear should be no problem, even on stock 89 rims.
