Post 2001 LS1 Camaro Z28 SS

My buddy used to have a 97 Mustang GT, but I think he got sick of loosing to my 96 Cobra, so he just traded it in and bought a 2001 Camaro Z28 SS(Lame as hell if you ask me). Anyways yesterday he took me for a ride in it, and it did not feel any faster than my Cobra. After I felt it out, I decided I wanted some of him... That night we went out to a back road, and marked out a 1/4 mile strip. We lined up and went for it. He launched harder than me, and had about a car by second,(I have some messed up synchros or something because I can no longer power shift second). Through second it was pretty even, I was pulling him a bit, then I hit third and we pretty much leveled off. He won by maybe 3\4 of a car length. Needless to say I am not very impressed with these new Z28's. I think I may have been able to take him with a new tranny, or maybe just a short shifter. Oh well, all good you cant win them all...

Cool

Gears and tires, then you'll make your friend want to start modding. Fun as hell.

Sounds like a stout cobra, but also remember that LS1 cars run a LOT better after about 3K miles on them.

Theres a guy at the local Muscle car hang out that has a 2000 Z28 SS. He ran it hard from the start. Well ten thousand miles later, its starting to throw some oil out the pipes on deacceleration (not just a little slight puff) and starting to act a little rough at idle occasionally.

It runs strong, but not the earth shattering beast the guy said it was.

Yeah after riding in it, the only thing I like about the Camaros's is the T-Tops and the stock 6 speed. I certainly did not feel the 20 horsepower over my car...

I have to ask what you have in your 97 Cobra? Its just a curiosity thing.. Oh and couple more things.. i pound my car hard and with 11k miles i use zero oil.. and its true that the cars make more HP after breaking in (what kind of dope races a brand new car?) .. with $200 in mods i dynoed at 320rwhp (~370at crank) and 333rwtq.. So i wouldnt go knockin GM too much..

long live the blue oval / bow tie battle!

First off hes not lame hes just smart .
Secondly give the guy and the car a chance. How many miles on the car and I'm sure he has to get used to it.
Let him get some of those free mods in place and a lid and try to run him again, the out come will be differant.

Yeah, I would hardly consider a car that makes about 300 rwhp stock lame. Those cars can run really hard.

I don't care if it is a Mustang or a Z, beating a new motor is the stupidest thing to do. You risk screwing your compression by damaging your cylinder walls and lose lots of power you'd have if it was driven nice for a while.

Not all LS1's dyno at 300 RWHP but there seems to be a few of the 2001's pushing lots more than they are supposed to.

And don't forget, it is still de-tuned from the factory, lots more potential to be opened with a couple of little mods.

I wasnt saying that I though the Camaros are lame, I just though it was lame of him to trade in his GT for a new Camaro. So much more money... He is only 20 years old and now he has some huge car payments... My Cobra is bone stock other than synthetics (Mobil 1), and new Kumho tires. I have 29,000 miles on my cobra and I go through a quart of oil every oil change.
