quick run with a Bullit-racing the passat on thursday
I was on the way to get my car washed today and saw a Bullit in my rear view, he pulls up next to me and I drop a gear so he can hear that Im interested. The Bullit defintiely had a full exhaust w no cats, I couldnt tell what else it had.
I figured he would completely dump on my but that wasnt the case. We got to run through the top of second and at the end his front bumper was about 3 feet ahead of mine. Not much at all. He seemed quite impressed and asked me what year my car was. I told him that its a completely stock 98 w a cat back. I think that If we were to do a full quarter mile run my front bumper would be right on his ***. BTW two of my friends raced last thursday, One has a new Passat with a chip and the other has a 96-98 Cobra with stock gears lowered on 18" chrome with exhaust and a few other bolt ons. Believe it or not the Passat won....3 times in a row, from a dead stop, from a roll, and getting on the freeway. The Cobra owner says that his clutch is slipping It had better be slipping REAL bad otherwise he cant drive or his car sucks. Im racing the Passat this Thursday.

Slipping my asz! He cant drive! Or maybe the Cobra sucks asz! What year Passat? I drove the VR6 and they are pretty quick, but not that fast. The Golf GTI's have the VR6 and those are fast since they are so light. I assume the Passat has more than just a chip. Then again, its a newer German engineered car, so it may hold its own

The Passat is a 1.8 turbo. Its a really well balanced smooth handling, quick car. Its bone stock except for the chip. Im gonna race it next week.
The Cobra might suck...It has 18" wheels with the stock gears. That has to kill the gear ratio. Either way when I saw that car I wanted to race it. 96-98 Cobras just never worried me much unless they sounded different. I hope he comes to the poker game next week. I'll try to set up a 3 way race. I just took out my friends LT1 Camaro by a good car 1/2 so im feeling confident. I'll post the results if anyones interested.

The newest Passats are funky offset V8's, not the WR6 but a new engine. I think the WR6 is a 4 and the new engine somehow combines two WR6. Or at least that is what the ads say. If it was V8 in the Passat vs the Cobra it could have a real chance

Better be sure the Passat is really a 1.8 WR6 and not the newer version

Passat optional engines. I'd say that last one might hold up to a 96 Cobra

The Passat is defintely the 1.8 turbo. It was a quick car when he first got it but it wasnt fast. He sent the car out and had the chip installed, the chip adds a good 40 hp because it bumps the boost. That car is fast now for what it is. The Cobra should eat it up but I have a feeling that this kid isnt the best driver, the stock gears with larger wheels hurts, and the Passat owner is a very good driver. Maybe the Cobra's clutch was really bad too. I just know that the Passat dumped on it.
Im gonna try and run him next week. Im gonna try to run my friends V8 Lexus too. The Lexota is quick too...supposed to run low low 14's stock and hes REAL confident. But with the way my car has been running I just might come out on top.

What the heck is up with the cobra????
I wanna hear the results of the race with the lexota and the passat. Should be interesting. I raced a Lexota GS 430 about 2 years ago. It was new then, had a cat-back exhuast, a CAI, and a stall. He ran 14.4s @ 97mph. If that helps. A guy in the F-Body club here has a '02 GS 430 L tuned. It has a cat back, CAI, chip i think, and 3.73s from the factory. it dynoed 252 rwhp on a mustang dyno. Be confident. Sounds like you have a strong runner. Whats up with gettin the X-pipe, and shifter?!

The shifter I might do, right now theres no smog legal X or H pipe available for my car or I would get one too. I think the Lexota will beat the Passat but I dont know. Its gonna be a good 3 way race! I will definitley keep you informed.

fastang - have you checked to see whether you have higher numerically gears in the rear. Your car sounds pretty strong from a dig. You may have lucked out and got some 3:73's thanks to the previous owner.
That Passat shouldn't be any faster then a 15.0, and thats being kind. Something is wrong with that Cobra and/or driver. Otherwise, he has a few more mods he's not telling any one about.

The gears are definitely stock, Im turning 2 grand at 80mph I buying a set on Ebay soon. I dont know why but this car just seems quicker than it should be. Maybe its not and everyone I raced before just sucks but The car reminds me of my old 95 before the head/intake swap. I cant wait for the gears and juice. Im goin Ellis Juan hunting asap.
