New Celica GTS
Raced a new Celica GTS on the freeway this morning on the way to work. According to Sport Compact car, I thought these things run 14.9 in the 1/4 with a 6 speed (not sure if this one was auto or manual).
We got a clear spot on the freeway, so I slowed down to about 50 to let him get beside me (I knew he thought he was fast by the way he kept buzzing up on peoples' bumpers before this). He tried to do a fly by rather than lining up, so I put it in third and it was on. He could tell the race was over by the time we hit 75 or 80 - what a turd for the amount of money they cost. I ran 'er up to about 120 for the hell of it, and couldn't even count the carlengths because he gave up at about 100 or so... ------------------ 2000GT Atlantic Blue: Cobra R Wheels-17x9 255/40/17, 17x10.5 315/35/17, tubular K-member & control arms, Tokico 5-ways, coil overs, sway bars, strut/shock tower bars, 70mm FMS throttle body, Saleen nose. 79 Pace Car: Maximum Motorsports suspension - H&R Race springs, Bilsteins, rear control arms, chassis bracing, Draglites, 302 w/ Edelbrock Performer intake, cam and 600cfm carb, BBK equal-lengths & H-pipe, 2.5" Flowmaster 2chmbr exhaust, Al Driveshaft, 8.8 trak-loc, TCI C4 w/ 2000 stall, B&M |

Ya, they look ok, and they are supposed to be quick and good hadleing.....but given the price, I would think twice. Did anyone see the article in C&D about the celica that they put 500k into? It still ran a 13/14 in the quarter!

The new ones may be some quicker. I raced one a year or so ago that was new then and wasted him so badly it wasn't even funny. It was probably a '99. Must have beaten him by 10 or 12 lengths to 80 or so from a light. He new we were on too, as he staged at 2000-2500 with his coffee cans buzzing (yes he had two of what looked like Borlas)). It was all over from the beginning, not close anywhere.

I saw a couple dynos of GT-S's. They're similiar. The torque is lack luster though out the RPM band, then jumps right before redline to make the peak power. It looks like they still have some kinks to work out in the VVTi. |

I classify them with the TIBURON group.
I remember last fall a Celica tried to "show off" to Lizard King by pulling a fly by. When he was at his back bumper, Lizard stomped it, poor Celica never made it past his door handle before it was over. Lot's of rumours though on the new GTS, I guess time will tell. I'm still in the hunt got some new Prelude's. |

Right after those things came out, I went to a dealer to drive one. The salesman had a '95 Mustang GT with only a catback, and he tried to tell me that the GTS 6 spd would take me easy from a 30 mph roll. I just laughed in his face. He seemed a bit offended (go figure).

I just read in some road and track or somethin other day about those celicas doing 0-60 in 6 and half second range for the gts. Not too shabby. I still think it looks like a piece of junk though with those stupid headlights and that wacky body design.
