5.0
What are the differances between a HO 5.0 and a regular 5.0? It's a 1989 5.0 I just bought and need to know the differances. Thanks.

All of the fuel-injected 5.0s that came in Foxes are HO as far as I know.

Just to clarify, you just bought an 89 Mustang or an 89 motor? A stang for that year would have the HO, IIRC 205 HP (I think that was the "official" rating in 89, it kept changing, but real life it was about 225hp.)
If you just bought a 5.0 motor, the non HO was mainly used in cars like the Vic and Marqueis, it was somewhat de tuned, and correct me if I'm wrong, but had lower compression, and a different cam. The number 180 keeps jumping out to me as the HP. If you just got the motor and are not sure which it is, the non HO had the intake/TB turned toward the driver side instead of passenger. Hope this helps J

non 5.0
Hi. What this is, I bought a 1989 Crown Vic with a non 5.0 at an auction. I allready have a 1987 GT HO 5.0. I wanted to know the differances between the two and was considering building up the non 5.0 as a future engine for the GT. But I need to know if the non 5.0 is worth it or should I just sell that engine, trans and rearend and just stick with my HO 5.0 and put that money into it? Thanks...Steve

How many mile on the vic 5.0? Was it a police package? I would say if your thinking about rebuilding it anyway, you could upgrade to better than stock performance for not much more than a straight rebuild.
You could also sell the car/trans/rearend as ashell, and make back some of the money, and use it toward either motor. I would say that if you have the space, keep the motor, you never know when it might come in handy. This also gives you the option to build it slowly, without loosing the GT as transport. just my .02 J p.s. Or, on the other hand, you could always just ship me the motor for free, and i could find a use for it

non 5.0
Hey thanks for your help. The car itself was wrecked. The front end is pretty bad but the 5.0 is Ok as well as the trans and rearend. It wasn't a police car as you asked. Wish it was....
I'm sure I'll sell it all but don't know yet. It all seems to run OK though. But if I keep the engine I'll let you know. Any ideas on what to ask $$ for that engine? Thanks again...Steve. |

depending on the year...there could be slight changes to this.....and also if it has already been rebuilt.
but generally, The H.O. had forged pistons, low tension rings, and a roller cam, as well as a different firing order. A non - H.O., may have had roller cam previsions, but depending on the car it came out of, generally did not have the above mentioned options. If I am off on this, someone will correct me. In all honesty, sell the non-h.o. and use that money towards the h.o. Ryan
