Got beat driving a friends Mustang
Well, at least it wasn't my car. My friend just bought a '92 coupe with nothing but longtubes, Off-road H, E-cam and a Cobra intake. Our neighbor had a friend over that was yelling trash across the street about the new stang.
Later the same night he let me drive it around a bit and the dude across the street followed us. He is in a new 1.8 Golf with whatever bolt-ons and 18 PSI! He tried to get us doing a fly-by starting at about 40, but I stayed even. Then we punched from about 35 and the Golf left us. I heard the boost over the sound of the longtubes. I don't know much else about the Golf, but I was impressed. Then I got to thinking... $20,000 Golf $5,000+ for a huge turbo and other bullshit 1st time I ever drove the guys mustang Didn't feel very confident about the condition of his clutch and tranny. Not too bad considering he paid 3K for the car. Now if I can just find the guy when I am in my car...

that sucks...but I wouldnt consider a cam, intake and longtubes to be minor mods...that guy should see 12's in an LX with those mods on slicks.

if you can, find out exactly what the volkswagen has.......
i seriously doubt he has an upgraded turbo........and i wouldn't consider any of the potential upgraded turbo kits available for this car as a "large turbo"...........the stock turbo might be about the size of my fist (and i'm about 5'7" 130 lbs) you can run 18 psi for about $35 (though, i wouldn't recommend it as the only mod to even my worst enemy) and be in the 13's with sloppy 60 ft times

Check to see if your buddy has the stock heads on his car, If he does that cobra intake and cam isnt gonna do much for him right now. That might equate to your loss. - John

More info...
I don't know much more info on the VW, but the car is pretty nice. The guy has spent some pretty good money on it and it is built right(for a VW). I was just really impressed with the top end on the Golf. It really made me respect the power of properly tuned turbo 4 cylinders. 18 psi is nothing to sneeze at. I doubt stock 1.8T's come with large intercoolers conveniently mounted behind the front bumper either. Not just a turbo upgrade kit I assume.
My friend just bought the Mustang and it basically just has a fresh engine going for it. As far as all the suggestions with the engine combos... it is not my car. I have been wrenching on stangs for quite awhile and I definitely would not build the same combo that he is running. Yes, the heads are stock. However, I was pretty impressed with the power of the cam combined with the intake and LT's. His gears are much too high for me though and I had a hard time shifting it. His gears are one ratio higher than 4:56 i believe. Fun car to stomp on from a roll, but he is definitely in need of some good heads. He also had some SSM control arms that hooked VERY well on radials. My car would have been sideways with only 3:55 gears.

BTW, stock intercooler is in the wheelwell..........some of the fastest 1.8T's run FMIC's, some don't see the relocation as a worthwhile mod *shrugs*

It means that the car has other modifications such as intake, exhaust and other supporting parts needed for a properly built turbo car with a lot of boost.

i didn't understand the "just" part.......
an upgraded turbo is about the most extensive mod you'll find on an amateur built street car i took it as if you were downplaying it as if it was a k&n drop-in or exhaust or something
