Beat By a Mitsubishi Eclipse
OK.
I rarely come on the net unless it's to get parts for my cars (1968 Mercury Cougar, 1971 Ford Fastback, 2000 SVT Cobra R ) But i need to find out what the hell happen. Situation: I just bought the Corba about a year ago and she runs sweet. I was coming home late last night and pulled up beside a Black Eclipse(one of the new ones). The car looked slow/cheasy(my opinion) and had a nice set of rims, Carbon hood and the ricer sticker on the side window "Ripp Modified." The guys moves up to the crosswalk line and revs his engine. I think to myself.....You've got to be shittin' me, This guy can't be serious. My car will eat his piece of shit alive. I have a V* and he has what maybe a 4Cyl. His rev even sounded like shit. The light turns green and before I am in 3rd his car is at least 4+ cars in front of me. By the time we have gone though 3 intersections he's 5cars fwd. We end at the 6th and he's there waiting & as i pull up I see he has an RS badge on the rear bumper. He rolls down the window and says "Nice car," and turns Left. What an....ASSHOLE! the next day i went to a Mitsubishi Dealershit to see what the RS was pushing. the dealer tells me that the rs is the base model and if I was looking for power I might want to take a look at the GTS, a car whos HP is maybe 210. I am pushing 390 hp easy. So how the hell did an RS beat the shit outta my car? |

Let me introduce myself. My name is Adam and I am a member on Club 3G , an enthusiast site for the 3rd Generation Eclipse.
The car you raced was supercharged. Ripp Modifications is the leading form of FI for our cars. *hold on for just a minute as I gather some pics* All of these pics however are on the V6 GT/GTS platform (the 200hp engine) These kits are seeming to be getting more and more powerful as time goes on. The first few months, the kit was averaging about 280whp. In the past few months the kit is averaging about 350whp. The last pic I posted is the fastest 3rd Gen Eclipse in the nation pushing 400+whp/400+tq. As for the RS you raced, its a base model 4cyl. Your Cobra has 390hp. So Im assuming that should come out to approximately 350whp (correct me if Im wrong as all cars are different). The RS you raced had the Ripp SDS, so he was probably around 300-320whp. I think the main difference was the weight of both cars. I dont know how much your cars weigh, but I know they can be quite heavy. The base RS weighs in at around 2850. So I THINK thats where the race may have been won. Last edited by stylez; 07-03-2004 at 02:57 PM.. |

Welcome aboard stylez, it's good to have an import enthusiast who doesn't just want to come on here and flame. It sounds like you know your stuff!

Sounds like an awesome sleeper. I`m curious though, how much boost it takes to double the output - from 200 - 400?

I would have to hand it to mustangs. I did not know they made a car with 390 horsepower. |

They also made one in which they claimed it made 390hp. It is the 2003/2004 Cobra, and in fact it makes much more than that, as many owners have put down 370+ to the rear wheels.

Sounds like they are trying to keep up with corvette's. THis year they came out with 400hp and next year will be 500hp.

Viper?
And then there's the Viper putting out about 480 at the flywheel stock. I did see one at the shop where I get mine dynoed that made 600 at the wheels naturally aspirated and 900 on the bottle.

I didn't think the new Eclipses had a very big aftermarket.........am I wrong or right?
I still like the DSM's, I lost to one the other day on the street in my daily driver notch. DSM + mods + upped boost + AWD + street = Me losing by 2 cars -Josh, aka the tireburner

The aftermarket has grown quite a bit just in the year that I've owned my 3g. You're right though, when they first came out, it was rough. Some folks are running boosted now, some have the sds system. The headers alone by RIPPS were a great addition to the community and when he came out with the SDS combo man.. to sweet. We're all saving our pennies up for it now. I'll have mine in 4 more months. Just not wanting to drive down to NYC to get it installed and dyno tuned It's like a 5 hour drive for me. |

It's definitely top of the line. But when you can build a car that runs circles around it on a road course for half the price or less, it's definitely overpriced ($54,995 MSRP and they were asking $105k at my local dealership). It also weighs like 3800 lbs or something ridiculous like that.

well Josh I am one of those hardcore ones who think they are both a joke, but you gotta think about who is looking at them
in this case, it is someone with the username stylez, which leads me to believe that he cares more about the looks of the car than the performance, which is fine if thats what you're into. The Saleen and the Cobra R, I believe, appeal to these people because between the 2 of them, they have everything that they want, a huge spoiler, and ugly overdone ground effects (body kit to you guys). Oh yeah, and they also don't perform as well as they should. just my opinion

My username actually has nothing to do with my preference in cars. It was just a nickname I picked up in high school.
