he said his car had 230 hp
and he wanted to highway race so i did and i got a car ahead of him going 120 +
and he never caught up
y is that ? 230hp is more than my 225hp stock 289

i am assuming that you've got your 289 in an early stang.......

guestimating, early stangs are several hundred pounds lighter..........your opponent doesn't seem to know his car well if he wants a highway run instead of a launch...........if you are talkin' highway runs, an FWD GS-T should be a better battle

A GSX would take you off the line because they are AWD.
A GST would be a better match on the highway i think hes saying.
I think old Coupes only wiegh like 2900 lbs or so but i could be wrong

There are a couple of those around here, my friend has one thats stock other than exhaust.. You never can tell with those cars.. AWD's lauch like bats out of hell. One in town is just front wheel and it runs 14.2's spinning like hell. Boost controller, down pipe and exhaust and GSX's should be in mid 13's easy.

I raced an AWD GSX a few weeks ago at Kil Kare near Dayton, OH. The guy ran a 13 flat @ 105 - his 60' was a 1.7

He was modded - with what I don't know, but they launch really hard due to the AWD. Point is they're quick little cars in stock form and can be made even quicker with more boost/exhuast work, etc.

The earlier 64-66 coupes weight in at about 2800lbs. A GSX isnt that fast on the highway, its on the launch where theyre killer. 1.7 6o ft times on street tires

Only problem is once they hook up, you can through that awd out the window as it becomes a hinderance, so many mustangs will be able to catch up on the top end....especially a 2800lbs one.

well like i said this guy cant drive and when i talked to him yesterday he said that on the highway he was only in 3rd so he didnt even consider it a race but o well
his car still sux

yeah, GSX's weigh about 3800LBS!!!!

that **** adds up as far as weight.

my buddy pulled a 1.8 60ft'....on his 1973 Vette with 490 HP....on his first time EVER at a track....ON STREET TIRES!!!

a good 60' time is not out of anyones reach.

There are more things than just peak horsepower....

1. weight
2. HP and Torque curves... (i.e. usable power and torque through the rpm range)
3. gearing

My '66 coupe weighs 2950 without me in it. That's with 1/2 tank of gas. My car does have extra sound deadener, 2 1/2" full exhaust system, and home made ram air/cold air system for some extra weight. Aluminum intake, water pump, and heads counterbalance the added weight.

The '65-66 stangs are a brick areodynamicly. The coefficient of drag (air resistance) is cosiderable compared to modern cars. It does take a lot of extra power to push these bricks through the air at high (100 mph+) speeds.

All wheel drive may help some off the line but sucks power big time at highway speeds. It does take extra power to turn that extra machinery both during and after the launch.

The 225 hp in the '65 is gross hp. The 230 hp I assume is net flywheel brake hp in the GSX. The weight difference should explain any advantage enjoyed by the '65. I'm glad it prevailed.

i think you are refering to the VR-4..............i'd guess that a gsx is low 3000's, maybe 3100

The gsx weighed 3270 in 1999 and 3095 in 1990. Taken from Edmunds.com

I think the torque, and gears are what sealed the deal for you.
