Post automatic Cobra?

I know this is not about street racing, but I figured somebody in here would have the knowledge to answer this question. My cousin and I got into a big arguement tonight because he said that you could get a Cobra from the factory with an automatic, I tried to convince him otherwise, but he was convinced you could get one because his friend owned one. He is know for his b.s., but is it possible that a 94-up Cobra could have an automatic from the factory? By the way...he owns a 35th GT vert w/ 18in Saleens.

I have never heard of a Cobra with an auto but the Cobra guys could tell you for sure. There is a forum on this board just for SVT's and the like. You might try posting over there for some more info.

Thanks for the replies. I asked him the same thing...why would you want one? He told me that "manuals blow up too easy...his friend had to replace four of them already in his almost stock daily driven 89"-I just said, whatever and proceeded to leave. He also tried telling me that you couldn't get a 302 in an LX from the factory-yeah right. Thanks again for the answer.

I'm 20 and I've owned two cobras one a 94 white 5.0l and my newest (my baby) my 1996 4.6l Mystic. I am (I hate to brag) damn near an expert on these cars and they never were optioned with an automatic. Your friend is an idiot. People who think they know everything and don't are twice as stupid as anyone else.

I've gotten the reply that "You can't get a 302 in an LX from the factory" before. It's usually younger guys that didn't grow up in the "5.0 era". They assume LX is the base model since that is how they are produced now. They are correct in saying that you can't get a 302 in a 94 or 95 LX though.

I've had that same no 5.0 in an lx argument many times before. In particular there is one at my apartment and my friends where all ragging on it saying "it's not a real 5.0 etc etc" and I spoke up and said yeah it is. They kept saying"It doesn't look like a mustang, why doesn't it have ground effects, wing, good wheels etc".

Like Mystic said

"People who think they know everything and don't are twice as stupid as anyone else."

From what I haev heard, is that Ford will make anything you want. For example, my buddies dad wanted a 68 T-bird with 4 on the floor.... and as you know T-birds are all autos. Well, Ford built him one.

I also ran into a guy that had a 94 Cobra with a 5.4 from the factory. It was custom built... And he worked for Ford.

So an automatic in a Cobra is not that hard to imagine, however I don't see the point.

interesting that they would put in a modular motor during windsor production years

4.6l dohc with an auto? it would get murdered without a huge convertor.

I can't believe that about a 5.4 in a Cobra. Not a Cobra R right? I would like to know how the production number would go for that specific one. I'm sorry, no disrespect, I just find it impossible to believe. If this were true, then I guarantee you that almost every Cobra owner would ask for this option. I would like to see proof.

I know what you mean fivepointOH. I once heard someone say (about a 91 LX 5.0) "is it a 5.0 or a LX?"

To answer a question ... FORD will build you what ever you want???? If you have major pull in FORD and have deep pockets. There are a lot of 'one-offs' at FORD but they don't employees get a hold of these.

'one-offs' - ie 2000 GT bodied cars that carried the 2000 Cobra R motor in it for testing.

5.4 in a Cobra - yeah back in 00. Cobra R

Well, if you want to be completely technical, the Canadian Fox Cobra's were basically re-badged GT's so they could have come with AOD's.

The Lincoln Mark VIII was the 4.6L DOHC motor saddled with an AOD and 2.73's, also had the LSC that came with 3.27's. If I'm correct they ran 0-60 in almost 7 sec, and the quarter mile in the low 15's. With a few hundred lbs on a Cobra, that's not too bad.

I've seen one Cobra auto. It was special made for the guy. He had lost one of his legs in an accident.
