COBRA98 (stock) vs GT99 (semi-mod)
My neighbor friend has a stock 98 cobra, my friend told me that the cobra guy will race me for $50 but he wants to check my car first that I am not hiding a bottle or a charger. He said that he will bit me even with the mods I have done to my car so far. I told him that I will race him for a $100, he said he will think about, he is a student while I have a full time job. This guy goes to the racetrack sometimes, I go every weekend to an empty parking lot and race against myself. Both cars are standard; do you think I have a chance on winning? I read once that it takes the cobra 5.4-sec and 5.6-sec for the GT from 0 to 60.

Hey, I posted this question sometime last year. Check this link:
http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard...-5-001899.html If the link doesn't work then look in the archives section -Street Racers Corner under 97 Cobra vs. 99GT. Stock vs Stock I think the consensus was that the Cobra would win (305 hp vs 265ish hp?). Go ahead and run 'em and let us know. You have the advantage with the gears, but he's got a few more horses so it should be a good race. The Cobra really comes alive after 3,000 RPM to 7,000. ------------------ 1997 Black Cobra Convertible. #2788 of 3088 Mostly Stock - Vortech Anyone? 1988 5.0 LX Convertible -Work Car...Few Mods. |

If the Cobra is stock there is not a single shread of a doubt you will kill him.
I have beaten 2 Stock Cobra 97-98 up to now (easily) from a clean organized street race. Add your mods to the equation, and he is certainly dead, ...even if you miss a shift on second gear twice. You really have to screw up bad to loose this one. Make it a 2 out 3 just so there is no excuse... oh, and don't bring up the antes to much, he'll start doubting your car and you won't get the cash. Make it look like it's a "tough decision"... AND THEN RIP HIM A NEW ONE!!! hehehe ------------------ Lizard King, Bone Stock; 13.69 at 101MPH • Extreme Burnout •2000GT VS LS1 • Quartermile run •2000GT vs LX Stang |

I still don't understand where everyone thinks that 260 HP beats 305 HP???
You will get him off the line with your gears and then he will reel you in when you shift and he keeps on going to 7000 rpms. When my Cobra was mostly stock, I beat my friends 99 S281 with the Saleen supercharger on the highway. He had alot of bolt-ons and 4.10's and jumped me bad when we hit it, but then I just reeled him in and passed him. And now, hehe, I just straight wax his A$$ and my other friends 99GT with Vortech. As long as he drives that Cobra correctly, he will win. HP is HP, no matter how you guys try and slice it. You might win if you only race 1/8 mile, but like I said, on the top end, he will reel you in like a big bass. Later, Jason ------------------ N/A 1997 Cobra 1/8 mile - 7.75 @ 88.88 MPH Best MPH - 90.08 1/4 mile - 12.18 @ 113.06 MPH Best MPH - 114.02 1.60 60 ft. |

I like Cobras and respect them as much as the next Mustang Lover. BUT I know from experience the new GT's seems to be a more forgiving car to race. Luanching in a cobra seems to be trickier.
I've posted before how I beat the guy at work with his 98 Cobra several times in my 2000 5spd red GT (bieng red gives it 5 more HP ). If it were equal drivers, it should be a good race. I'd go to the bank if I were you and take out 100 $. Hey, nothings better than making money while doing what you love . Thats why I'm a porn star .. Just kidding. As for the HP question, theres alot more involved than just HP. You have to think of gearing, distance, usefull powerband, wieght. While the tranny and rear gearing are the same, there are tons of other factors. ------------------ 64 1/2 "D" code Red Mustang Coupe. 289, C4, 3:1 rear gear. Mallory duel point. If he can drive the car well I think the cobra will win. I think you might be able to get him in the beginning because of the gears, but he will come back as the rpms rise. 2nd gear in the cobra is awesome. Don't race him from a roll.. he will pull away.

Thanks for the reply guys, I was so scare of cobras before but now that I read what you have to say I think I have a chance.
My tires are spinning to much in the launching, I think that I can tight the illumina struts and shucks but I am not sure what level to set them for racing. I read once that by tighing the illumina and adjusting the rear sway bar would make the tires not to spin so much (anyone out there with this combo that can tell me what adjustments to use). I know I have the advantage in the take off so I better get the right combination. I will make sure the race happen this weekend most likely at the college parking lot, hopefully I can get some one to take pictures. |

Man, I think this will com down to the driver...just to let you guys know if you have never driven a car with a 3.73 gear this is tough to launch on street tires!! man all you do is burn rubber!! buddy of mine as a 13.6 running stang on slicks but on street tires he run no better thant a 14.9...also let's not forget that the cobra has a 3.27 gear which is awsome for street racing...I've seen an old man run his 98 cobra to a 13.4 at the track and a stock GT is suppose to run arround 14,0 (except for lizard of course..hhehh) with your mods and if you can stick'em good!! you should able the get that cobar but make it 2 out a 3 so you're sure!!
that's all I had to say about that!! ------------------ I wasnt speeding officer.. _________________________ 1995 GT Saphire Blue -Xenon body kit -Custom wheels |

I gotta agree with jmeirs on this one... if you race 1/8 you might take him but a full 1/4 or especially anything beyond and I think you're gonna lose. Are you sure he is bone stock? Street races are all about horsepower and he has more horsepower than you. The gears help but I still think you will lose. Find out what mods he has.

Yeah you are right, 3:73 on street tires all you do is spinn the tires and you don't move.
Before we race we will check each other's car so there is no cheating. If he does bit me I will ask him if I can have another shot but this time I will go and buy better tires for the rear (that's is the difference between the cobra and the GT I still have money to spare). I will ask him to race without betting money, I would feel bad taking his money besides I could do something better with that $100. ........................................... 99GT… rear sway bar (adjustable) rear lower control arm traction bars, tokiko struts illumina 5 position, tokiko shocks, caster camber plates racing lower springs 3:73 strut tower brace underdrive pulleys Michelin “pilot XGT-Z4. It'll come down to you getting out of the box a car length ahead. If you come off together or he takes it from the get go.....Cobra wins. 305>260

This is a bit off the subject, but seemed like a good place to ask the question. I have a 96 mustang cobra, and I was just getting ready to have 4.10 gears installed, until I just read this topic. 3.27 gears are better for street racing that 4.10? I rarely ever go to the track, so all I ever do is street racing? Should I stick with my gears or get 4.10's still? As far as the topic goes, I think your GT has a real good chance of beating the cobra, if it was me, I would be too nervous to put $100.00 on the line...

Put some 4.56's and Nitto Drag Radials on the 96-98 Cobra and its bye-bye to any year GT with same mods.
3.27's are not the perfect gear for anything other than a paper weight. The DOHC has no torque down low, you need the biggest gears you can stand to get up in the RPMS. At the track, I launch at 7600 rpms and never see below 4500 rpms the whole 1/4 mile. Plain and simple, the fastest N/A GT that I know of runs 12.50's. He has every bolt-on you could think of plus SVO heads, SVO Intake and Regrinded Cams. I on the other hand have a bone-stock motor from TB to Oilpan and I am on the verge of 11's. Mod for Mod, the Cobra will always win. What? Are you gonna try and race bone stock Cobra's all your life??? There aren't many stock Cobra's left in this world. Even if you beat him, that does not mean you will beat every Cobra. I only wish I could show you naysayers how a Cobra is supposed to run. If you seen it with your own eyes, you would probably trade yours in. I bet I paid less money with all my mods + the Cobra that some average Joe did for a new GT. Talk about Cost Effectiveness!!! Later, Jason ------------------ N/A 1997 Cobra 1/8 mile - 7.75 @ 88.88 MPH Best MPH - 90.08 1/4 mile - 12.18 @ 113.06 MPH Best MPH - 114.02 1.60 60 ft. |

I think the 3.27's are an excellent gear, for a torquemonster. On the Cobra, they are pretty lame.
I'd expect the driver of the Cobra to run 13.5-14.0. I'd expect the 99GT with those mods to run 13.6-14.4 depending on traction. You won't know till you run him. Oh, and jmeiers, take a look at what the 1996-2001 Cobra's are running in $$ now. I think people must have caught on to them. A nice 96 will set me back $18k here, add about 1.5k every year newer to that. |

I totaly agree with Jmeiers about stuffing the steepest gears you can find in a 4 cam Cobra. They need them. But if that Cobra realy is totaly totaly stock, the GT's gonna win. The stock gears just hold it back too much.
