I have driven a 67' GTO with a 400, total frame off resto. Guy (at the time) wanted $6500 for it. I got into it and said to myself "Hmmm, I figured GTO's were faster than this?". This was while I had the Camaro. I love GTO's, wouldn't mine having one someday, but I wasn't impressed.
Also, I go to the Nostalgia drags where I see big blocks mustering 14's, a few mid to high 13's, and a couple in the 15's. I will scratch the 15's for bad driving but still. My 69' ran 13.80's and you are telling me that my only chance of beating a big block is if it's worn out? O.K., so a SS 396 Chevelle with 325hp and a Turbo 400 would take an SS 350 Chevelle with 300hp and a Turbo 350? Don't think so. I don't buy your definition of a "Muscle Car". It's an opinion with nothing to back it up of any substance. No flames here, just a friendly debate. ------------------ SVO siamesed 351 stroked to 417ci,Yates heads, solid roller,Trans King glide and a little blue bottle of giggle gas. My Car |

65gto, where do you come up with this? my dad had a 383 coronet back in his days, that was full of machine work, and serious mods (around 500hp), and never lost to anyone, including 69 427 vettes, 69 bb olds, but he did say he had a boss 302 (almost) beat him from a rolling speed on the highway, he was taching out, bigblocks have lots of off line torque, and notice these cars have to hook up to run good numbers? but take for instance....an ls1, yea lighter, but not that much, and can take a stock 427 vette, or hang very close, but get way better gas mileage, along with better reliability, big bore motors made killer torque though, no doubt.

my boss just bought a 1967 stingray vette....he took out the 427 and dropped in a 502chevy bb,6 speed tranny, redid the entire car with new lighter parts......kept the old parts so he can put it back to original......nothing on it is stock
he has to run small tires though cause he don't want to chop it up JAMES ------------------ Black 1990 gt cobra bonestock not for long |

on american musclecars they kept refering to certain muscle cars as pony cars.....cuda challenger mustang camaro........a mustang with a 289 is a pony car.......mustang with 429 is a muscle car..........cuda witha 340 is a pony car cuda with a 440+6 is definetly muscle car
their definintino was based on that the pony cars were built in order to race trans am cuda, challenger, camaro, mustang but in order to do that u had to have under 305 ci's............camaro used 302 so did mustang.......from wut understang the mopars had a special version of the 340 nwhich was cut down to 304.6 ci that is somewhat how they defined it ------------------ Black 1990 gt cobra bonestock not for long |

A chrysler 340 is a small block. Big block heads will not fit. Pontiac 326 and 350 are small displacement versions of the same block used to build 389,400,421,428,and455 engines. They have the same bell housing bolt pattern and motor mounts, but the crankshaft journals are not the same size. Kevin read what i said. I never said a 325hp 396 should beat a 350 camaro. I said to race a high performance big block. Such as a 375 hp 396 in a 67 chevelle or maybe a 70 chevelle with a 465 hp 454. Anyway the ultimate fast stock cars in most cases were pony cars with big blocks. Such as 427 camaros, 428 and 429 stangs, hemi cudas and darts. You cant beat lightweight, less drag and more power.

By the way I was just funnin' when I called small blocks starter engines. I can't see spending the money to build a good big block, unless you come across a good deal on a whole car, not with all the good deals on small blocks now. How much power do you really need?
