This 67' impala could waste any of us!
The Arizona Highway Patrol were mystified when they came upon a pile of smoldering wreckage embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The metal debris resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it turned out to be the vaporized remains of an automobile. The make of the vehicle was unidentifiable at the scene.
The folks in the lab finally figured out what it was, and pieced together the events that led up to its demise. It seems that a former Air Force sergeant had somehow got hold of a JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off) unit. JATO units are solid fuel rockets used to give heavy military transport airplanes an extra push for take-off from short airfields. Dried desert lakebeds are the location of choice for breaking the world ground vehicle speed record. The sergeant took the JATO unit into the Arizona desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, accelerated to a high speed, and fired off the rocket. The facts, as best as could be determined, are as follows: The operator was driving a 1967 Chevy Impala. He ignited the JATO unit approximately 3.9 miles from the crash site. This was established by the location of a prominently scorched and melted strip of asphalt. The vehicle quickly reached a speed of between 250 and 300 mph and continued at that speed, under full power, for an additional 20-25 seconds. The soon-to-be pilot experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog-fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners. The Chevy remained on the straight highway for approximately 2.6 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied the brakes, completely melting them, blowing the tires, and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface. The vehicle then became airborne for an additional 1.3 miles, impacted the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, and left a blackened crater 3 feet deep in the rock. Most of the driver's remains were not recovered; however, small fragments of bone, teeth, and hair were extracted from the crater, and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel. Ironically a still-legible bumper sticker was found, reading "How do you like my driving? Dial 1-800-EAT-****." www.darwinawards.com

How cool would it be to show up at a street race sporting that type of mod? If one could control it and not reach that extreme speed it should be considered fair game since everyone's saying "run what'cha brung"? .....food for thought.

You know that had to be one hell of a ride. If the doctors told me I had a few days to live I'd probably do the same thing. =) Wouldn't it be cool to pull up to the lights and take off in that thing. lol I'm surprised the tires didn't blow at those speeds befoer he applied the brakes. How big are those things anyway?

Yeah...that one happened quite a while back. I heard about it a number of years ago.
You know it's gotta suck for the guy in the car. I imagine he had almost a minute to contemplate the idiocracy of his actions before he smashed into the mountain. Better have made his peace, 'cause what are you gonna do? What I want to know is how he secured the rocket to his car. Those things carry a wollap. --nathan

Dark 5.0 : "It would still be run watcha brung...........The theory behind this is anything you have done to your car I could also do to mine if I was so inclined. The fact that the next guy may have more stuff done to his car than you just means hes further ahead of the game than you. Any REAL racer realizes this and brings his car up to a competitive level. Alot of people need to realize that racing is just like life, it isnt fair. People that always whine that life isnt fair and cant compete end up shooting thereselves. Which leads me to believe that maybe handguns should be an available option on honda civics.
Peace," dark 5.0, i think that is the smartest thing iv ever herd you say! |

That was an old "Darwin Award" winner
I agree life isn't fair. I just watched a video clip of a 600 hp Supra highway racing a 2002 s/c Cobra. Was it a fair race some my say no because the Supra owner Knew what he had and the Cobra didn't. I think it was fair because like eveyone is saying there are no rules on the street when you are racing.
20lbsboost I read your last post I think you had your ***** handed to you by someone with N2O and need to talk this out with your Shrink. GET OVER IT!

I have had my @ss handed to me many times by cars and trucks with nitrous.
I even once made a post bitching about people using nitrous, since then I have learned the real racer motto. Run Watcha Brung!!!!
