Default What's up with BMW's?

First let me remind everyone here that my GT got beat by a bone stock 99 M3. I might have won if I hadn't given the guy the jump, but it still would've been really close. Anyway,

My bud has an 01 Lexus GS430, the ones with 300hp. He is into cars, and has put on some sort of exhaust system and a cold air intake. Well, I run into this guy the other day and I mention that my car got smoked by a stock M3. He then tells me that his younger brother just bought a 01 BMW 330ci and kept saying how he could smoke Ryan's(my bud) GS. So Ryan tells me they go out to race, and they go from a dead stop. The BMW puts 2 cars on him up to 80. They take it to the freeway, and again, the BMW puts a quick 2 cars on him, and won't give in! What the heck? I gotta think Ryan's car is at least low 14's, and likely high 13's?!? How is this stock 330ci beating him. BTW, both cars are automatics! Is BMW underrating their cars or what?

I think that they have to be underrating them I have seen a new BMW (dont know what model it was) Hang side by side with an auto LS1.

Pretty good performers.

On one of those street racing sites there are a bunch of 330ci's killing stangs and camaros.

Makes you wonder.

Sounds like maybe the 330 wasn't stock. They put the all-wheel-drive version of the 330 up against the new Impreza and the Subaru spanked it. I know that up top the RWD will be putting more power down, but still something doesn't add up there.

My son bought a brand new Lexus 430 SC. It's a gorgeous car and really wonderful to drive, but it runs 14.6 in the 1/4 mile (R&T test). They're nice but not all that fast.

BWM's are fast, esp the lighter 3 series with the inline six cylinder motors. The 330 is rated at 225 hp and @ 240 ft/lb torque. And yes, BMWs are underrated in HP. Don't lose sleep over a car that costs 2 x's or more of what you paid for your stang keeping up with you on the street. They are the sports car of luxury car world and are pretty fast out of the box (esp when you get to the 400 hp M5s and the newer 333 hp M3s). My friend has an 89 turbo trans am and we crushed a 325 last month in a stop light duel. 330's aren't much faster so don't worry about it. It makes sense for someone to brag that their 45k import car can beat a 20k mustang... BMW drivers need love too lol.

Thumbs up

Save all your pennies and dimes and then go to www.paulshp.com. You need the (260 rwhp) DragPak Stage I. You can't let these imports win.

Don't even worry til you get down to the "M" cars. the''3" M BMW's will run mid-high 13's and the "5'" M BMW's will run low 13's . All the "M"s are extremely quick and deserve a lot of respect. Don't under-estimate them.

ok, I know the BMW's are quick, and expensive, but you guys are missing the point.

In my race, the M3 had 240hp. I should have 280-290 with my setup, and I've got the 4.10 gears. Also, I had removed about 100lbs from my car when we raced.

Second, my friend's GS has ~310hp, and he lost to a car with 225??? By two cars???? Something is VERY wrong here.

The M3 that beat me was BONE stock, of the showroom floor, with not so much as an air filter. The 330ci that beat my bud's lex was BONE stock, off the showroom floor, with less than 1000miles on it.

Since the beginning, I've been told, "Anything can happen on the street." But you can't deny the laws of physics, and it takes Horsepower and torque to get moving, and stay moving, and flat out, these cars should not have been able to win. What am I missing?

The laws of physics don't lie. Either you or he had less or more horsepower to the pavement/ weight at the start. Areodynamics can play a part down the track as MPH accumulate. (happens to me all the time).

Besides Jap cars being inordinately heavy, they usually have very "squishy" trannies. That sucks up a lot of power as well.
