96 Cobra\99 GT
I have a question for you guys... I ran into this guy who has a 99 mustang GT. It is lowered, has an aftermarket exhaust, and a K&N filter, other than that it stock. I have a 96 Cobra, with 30K miles and it is bone stock. We are going to race this weekend and I was curious who you felt would win? Doesnt really matter to me, he is a really nice guy, and I would say that our driving experiance is about the same(we both suck). Any tips, thoughts ect... One last thing, my car grinds second really hard if I try to power shift it, so I have to hold the clutch in for a moment shiting from first to second.

Check out this link. I raised a similar question last year. Be sure to read all the replies b/c there are a few differing opinions.

I think driving would decide this one. It's all in the launch.

I was killed 4 times (by 1 car lenght to about 3) this weekend by a well done Cobra96 ... I forget the exact mods, but I know gears for sure, and complete exaust.
He said he ran 13.4 at the track, and he seemed very competent (could never beat him on launch). If your Cobra is stock, you will loose... unless you hit a bad driver. |

The GT has more low end torque but the cobra will run away at high speeds here's my prediction:
1/8 mile, GT ahead 1/4 mile, too close to call 1/2 mile, cobra by 5+ cars. Cobra's need gears in a big way! ------------------ GT-40 heads (ported, polished, + milled), B303 cam, 1.7rr's, JE pistons, Offy intake, Carter AFB 625cfm carb, Flowtech 1 5/8" shortys, Flowtech X-pipe, MAC Flowpath exhaust, MAC pulleys, 373's, subframes, Eibachs+Tokicos, B+M ripper, FMS Clutch, Zoom Quadrant+cable, 17" CSA Ultra rims, 235/45ZR17 Yokohama AVS S4's, MSD 6A ignition+coil, FMS 9mm wires, Carbed, Naturally Aspirated, and Nasty! |

82GT is right about the Cobra needing gears but I think it is more important to know how to drive the Cobra. If I remember when my car was stock and its been awhile since then, to get to 70 all you needed was 1st and 2nd gear, saving you the shift to 3rd I need now with my 3.73's.
The point is I've driven both cars stock and know that the cars are pretty damn near even on paper but that isn't the case if you know how to drive these cars. If you rev the DOHC to redline on those first two shifts, the torquey feeling, GT should be the loser here. Not by much but still behind 1 to 2 cars, despite the crappy gears in the Cobra. ------------------ formerly 96cobra89lx306 (96Cobra/softtop-3.73,almdrvsht,fancontrl,steeda sbfrmes+shifter,eibachspgs,KYB's,FR-upper arms,Saleen copy-polished 18's,pulleys,Bassani X pipe(gutted),C&L 80mm Cobra DYNO 301rwhp horsepower before gutting the X pipe 93 Ford Probe Gt(slower but turns) |

No offense man, with equal drivers, I think the GT will win in an 8th or quarter mile run. Not to offend any Cobra guys out there.

Thanks for the reply's I figured it will be really close. I always take my car up to 7,000+ rpms when racing, dont really no if it is bad for my car or not, the only problem is always the launch... My tires arn't the best for launching, seems like I am either spinning way to much or not enough. What do you guys think, I usually launch around 2,500 rpms, does this sound right or do you think I should take it up higher?

I just raced a 95'Cobra this weekend in my 00'GT. He had full exhaust(headers,H-pipe,and 2 chamber muff.),ram air, injectors,FRRP Fuel pump,275/40-17 Nitto Drag Radials, and some other stuff. I have 3 chamber flows,3.73 gears,K&N filter, underdrive pulleys, & yoko A008P 255/40-17 . The location:Santa Ana street races:sunday 5/28. He heated up his tires and pulled up to the line. Hands dropped and I was gone. I pulled atleast 2 cars ahead of him and held that lead to the end. We raced again and I beat him even worse. I know the 95'Cobras are 20hp shy of the 96's so I think it will be a very close race. Try to practice your launch because 99-01's have excellent low end torque. It will be your key to victory. Goodluck!

Your second gear grinding is probably due to the fact that T-45s suck. A friend of mine with a 97 cobra had less than 20k miles on it, and the first time he powershifted it blew out all gears except first. Granted he had a vortech on it, but with street tires I'd think it could handle at least a few powershifts. T-45s are weak. Be leary of powershifting them. |
