Question Clutch

Just a quick question. I have a 90 GT 5.0 Hatchback that i just bought, and the diagonostic guy told me it'll need a clutch soon. Not sure what kind of tranny i got, but does the clutch affect the performance? As in, X type of clutch is better then Y clutch..and if so which clutch should i get? Any suggestions?

Thnks

Clutch X and Y do not give you any more horsepower it either grabs harder and/or stronger. The more powerful your engine is the more you will need a stronger clutch. There are several brands and types of clutches. Make sure that you pick one that is good for you setup and for future mods. Take note that most clutches have a HP rating for them. This lets you know how much power it can handle. I have a Sacs gold race clutch. I LOVE IT!!! It grabs real hard and quick. I have noticed that a lot of Mustang owners talk about Centerforce clutches but they wear out a lot faser then most performance clutches. So, shop around and talk to a bunch of performance guys. FYI: if you have a stock trany, the you should have a T-5.

Wrong forum.

Go with a Motorsport. A very versatile, economical piece.

cyberstang5.0 you are work about the clutch not giving HP yes with a Light clutch it will take less power do to less rotating mass it is a fact BUT..... Is it realy worth it min cost would be about 400-500 and might Free up 1-2HP So I would say forget about spending all the money on a new clutch get a cheaper one like A Ford HD

Personally, I had a Centerforce II, and loved it. It had light pedal pressure, and grabbed like mad, and only cost $249. However, I think it contributed to the short life of my tranny, with only 1600 miles on a brand new T5, I stripped third gear. This clutch hit VERY hard when I powershifted, and I think that shock is part of what did it. But, it was spectacular otherwise, and I can't prove that it caused any problems, and I'm getting another one when I put my Tremec 3550 back in.

That is BS. I had to buy a centerforce II(I wanted the DF) because that is all the local speed shop had, and I needed it that day! It's held up to about 50 1/4 blasts, and that is launching at 4500+rpm with slicks. I have dumped the clutch so many times on the street, big smokey burnouts,etc...., I am really impressed with the clutch, it's as if it were brand new. Clutches have about a 500 mile break in period, and if you go hard on it when you have 2 miles on it, it's not going to last. Break it in right. You can get the motorsport one, I am just a little partial to Centerorce, I've had very good experiece in all my cars with them. I suggest the Centerforce Dual Friction, and the pedal feel is pretty light too, so don't worry about that. But at $320+Throwout bearing, I think if I were you ,I'd go with the Centerforce II($169.99+$33.99T-B)<----the prices are right out of jegs.

Motorhead, the Centerforce II doesn't grab THAT hard, now come on....that's not why your 3rd gear messed up.

I raced with a Motorsport clutch for 3 years. Right into the 11's. It finally slipped a little on an 11.50 pass and I put in a Centerforce Dual Friction unit.

I think that SPEC makes the toughest clutches though.

Also, one thing I haven't seen anyone mention, is that Centerforce builds all of the Motorsport clutches.

And, 1BAD89, I know that the clutch isn't entirely at fault, it was also my driving style. What I said was that I thought the clutch was why the second tranny broke so quickly. The original tranny lasted from 18,000 to 33,000 miles being beaten like a red-headed stepchild, and the second one lasted from 33,000 to 35,000. Barring any poorly heat treated parts, the only explanation is the only change to the system, that being the clutch, which was installed at the same time as the new tranny.

i got the centerforce on my car and i think its a sack of $hit. on my last car (modded 90 GT) i had a FRPP (ford racing performance products for the virgin's info) and i loved it. i hate that self aligning throwout bearing on the centerforce. you got a T-5 unless someone swapped in something else. go with the ford motorsport heavy duty or king cobra, you'll be glad you did.
