BMW puts up a fight
Ran against a 540iA last night a few times on the freeway.
It was a lot closer than I would like to admit. First time we went from about 75 and it was dead even until about 100, with me pulling 1/4 to 1/2 car by 115 when we had to shut it down. The next race we went from 60, and all the way through third it was dead even again. Put it in fourth and started to pull a little when I hit the powerband. I pulled about 1/2-1 car by the time my speedo read 130 and we came up on some traffic so I shut down. Good thing too, because I was at about redline in 4th (3.27's), and fifth just doesn't pull with stock gearing. He, on the other hand, has a 6 speed, so he probably would have won if we went for much longer (155mph governed top speed). Those things are good on the highway. Looked up the specs on this car (according to Car & Driver): 0-60 in 5.5, 14.1@100mph, 282hp, 324 ft-lb. Not bad for a 3700lb car... Of course for over $50K I would be pissed to lose to a car that costs 1/2 as much. Kick azz and leave hoofprints... |

6 speed on a BMW 540? is that some special model? I don't know what your top end is but those benz and mercedes can do 155 or so topped out and all day long like a drive through a residential area. Even the little ones are pretty good. I have an 89 190 benz with a 2.6 inline 6 and I could get over 100 very easily and should top out at 130 from what I read.

Haven't been to the track since I was stock, but at that point I was running low 14s with traction problems (burn 'em or bog, but I've learned that I can leave faster if I rev and slip the clutch). 14.2@98 was my best. Hoping to get into the 13s now with less weight up front, bigger tires in the back, and a better launch.
My suspension is almost done now, so hp mods will be next. LincoConti87 - 6 speed was what the Car & Driver website said for the 540iA with manual. ------------------ 2000GT Atlantic Blue: Cobra R Wheels-17x9 255/40/17, 17x10.5 315/35/17, tubular K-member & control arms, Tokico 5-ways, coil overs, sway bars, strut/shock tower bars, 70mm FMS throttle body, Saleen nose. 79 Pace Car: Maximum Motorsports suspension - H&R Race springs, Bilsteins, rear control arms, chassis bracing, Draglites, 302 w/ Edelbrock Performer intake, cam and 600cfm carb, BBK equal-lengths & H-pipe, 2.5" Flowmaster 2chmbr exhaust, Al Driveshaft, 8.8 trak-loc, TCI C4 w/ 2000 stall, B&M |

My uncle, who has 12 cars, bought a black 2000 540i auto. It's very nice looking, and comfortable. Handles like a dream too. He always talks crap about how it could take my GT, but I havent run him yet. Unfortunately, he also has 4 Corvettes, one of which is a red 85 vert with 3000 miles, and a silver 64? with some sort of chevy crate engine, so even if I take the benz, he'll hand me my *** in one of his other cars. The sad thing is, he's one of those guys that knows a bunch about how to work on cars, but not much about anything else. He told me the benz does 0-60 in 4 sec. I doubt that.
