Question Gears: Can you really knock off 9 tenths?? "ET GUESSES"

One of the salesman for the company that I work for who also builds race car engines told me that some of the cars that he has worked on have dropped 9 tenths in the quarter with a simple gear swap.

I was expecting to knock off about 5-7 tenths in the quarter after my gear swap from 2.73's to 3.73's.

This will be the first "major" mod that I have done to my car and I cant wait to see how much it helps, also after the gear swap should I run more MPH than I am now?

must have been a very mismatched combo if a simple gear change picked up that much

you'll pick up a bit but not close to 9 tenths, more like .2-.3 as for m.p.h to increase mph you need more hp.

To increase mph you just need to put more hp to the ground, if you're way out of your pwerband w/stock gears(you probably are, even with a stock car) and the gears let you use more of your hp, your mph will improve. I picked up .6 and 3mph going from 2.73 to 3.73, some of that was probably experiance/ learning to drive better though.

Well, I dropped 7/10's by swapping to a five speed. Though I dropped some spinning weight, it's basically a change in gear ratio. It went from 2.40 1st gear, to 3.35, which is like having an auto with 3.73's.

Now, I went to 3.55's from 2.73's and my traction went to sh!t. I went from 14.7(@65*) to 15.0 (@95*). The temperature differences would probably equal out the times, but I was pissed.

Jeb, I'm also worried about traction problems going from 2.73 to 3.73 in a week or 2. What were your 60' times with diff gears? Were you running at Bithlo(Orlando Speedworld)? That is where I run & I dont think the traction there is very good anyway...I'll post on here as soon as I do my gear swap & get to the track. Mabe time for drag radials or slicks...:-)! Later!
