I need help & didn't know where to post.
I've just recently talked my Mom into letting me buy a mustang. . I'm only 16 years old ( I'll be 17 in March ) so it took a lot of convincing. I had to go a whole year without any tickets, wrecks, blah blah blah. I made it though. Now my only problem is figuring out what I want. I found a really nice 1999 GT, it's silver too, which is a plus! I can afford it ( Momma is paying half ) with money left over to play around a little. So now on to my questions. What kind of performance and body modifications can I get done to make it look better and go faster? I've almost already decided on the basic things like ground effects, neons, and rims. I tossed around the idea of modifications to my 19 year old brother, immediately he started in on things that I have no clue what they are or what they do. Supercharger, Intake, Headers... I just smiled and nodded through his whole spill. I know that my brother can go overboard way to quick. So what is ya'lls opinion? Any ideas?

First of all welcome to the site. It is an awesome place to hang out here. A lot of cool people and you can learn a lot on here. I am only 17 and just bought my stang like 3 months ago. I would say that your first modification would be like a exhuast system from the catalytic converter and back. This will give you awesome sound and some more power. It would probably be like $300 but im not too familiar with 99's. A good place to go and hang out on here is the blue oval lounge. Have fun!

If speed is what your after, the first thing I would recommend is not getting the ground effects or neons, they add unnecessary weight and will only slow you down. Plus 99's have ground effects anyway.
As far as performance mods, I'll list them in the order I think is the best bang for the buck. 1- 3.73 or maybe a 4.10 gear. The modular motors love to rev, the gears will keep you high in the rpm range most of the time. 2- Exhaust. A cat back will do fine as Midnite mentioned, but a full exhaust (i.e; headers, h or x-pipe, and mufflers) will help alot. 3- Steeda timing adjuster so you can bump timing. 4- A larger mass air meter. This allows more air into the motor, more air=more power. 5- Aftermarket shifter (i.e; pro 5.0 or hurst). There are alot of other things, I don't know your budget, but since your still in school, I can't imagine it's too much. You could also find a 90-93 fox bodied 5.0. Parts are every where for these cars, plus parts for 5.0s are cheaper than for the modular stuff. And a fox will cost you considerably less than a modular.

Don't listen to your brother....listen to a fellow female First, you gotta loose the idea of putting neons on that Mustang! This ain't no Honda, sweetie! You've gotta keep up the good name of Ford Mustang! If you want it to sound good n' loud, you'll need a cat-back ehaust system...or at least an offroad H-pipe (you can keep your stock mufflers). You'll soon catch the speed bug that makes you wnat to go fassst...so gears would be next on the list. A lot of new owners get new shifters, too. I bet you'll be happy (for a short while) once you do those few, inexpensive things. Talk to these guys on the board for types of exhaust and what kind of gears to get...I dunno too much about new GTs. Take care! Good to have you here!

The nice thing about Mustangs is that you can make them into anything you want - cruiser, drag racer, road racer, etc.
Body kits and other appearance mods are a matter of taste. I went with a Saleen body kit and Torq Thrust II's (no stickers or anything else). There are many routes you can go for power - it just depends on how fast you want to go and how much money you want to spend. Blowers and Turbo Kits are awesome on these cars and run from about $3-5K and up. I myself and going to do all the bolt-ons and then get an intercooled blower... As far as bolt ons that give you the most horsepower, I would say timing adjuster, underdrive pulleys, and long tubes with an h- or x-pipe.

Then an off road or high flow H-pipe or X-pipe and a peformance Cat-back. That will get you going. |

Before you go out and by a stang drive a few and see what you like. Drive a nice 86 to 93 and then drive a 96 to 02 mustang. After you decide on what you like then ask yourself what you want the car to do. Do you want to go fast or just cruz around and sound good. The basic mods to start with would be.
1. Remove the air silencer and get a K&N air filter. 2. Cat back exhaust like Flowmaster or Borla 3. Rear end gears. I would do a lot of research on all of this and become familiar with all of these parts before you go wild. A word of advice though...one you start moding four stand it will be a little Addictive . Agreed. If I could go back in time I would have gotten a 95GT. New body style with the 5.0......soooooo inexpensive for new heads and intake (although they're runnin a deal on new heads and intake for $1500 for the 4.6).
There is also a huge difference between a 96GT and a 99GT, a 45 horsepower difference...

Okay... so the 95GT is less expensive for some of the parts, but then I'd have to go out and buy ground effects because I like the 99's body style.... and to answer stevestum... I want a fast car that looks and sounds good. Basically I'm tired of the girls around here gettin' a bad rep because they are too scared to stand up and race the guys. Seeing as how I come from a racing family... I'm not scared ) So I want beat the pants off all the guys that think they are SOOOOO bad *****. 99-02 Gt's have 260 hp 94-97 GT's have 215 hp and the 98 GT's have 225 hp. I personally would get a 87-95 GT because they are so damn easy to mod. Their parts are a lot cheaper. Just my opinion. They are all great cars to drive though.

The 95 5.0 has practically the same interior as a 99 and for $225 you can make the car look just like a 98 (taillights) Get a 5.0 if you wanna be fast and not spend insane amounts of money.

96GTfanatic has a very good point, the cars are amlost identical accept for the tail lights and the side badges. In my opinion the 5.0 is your best bet.

Go drive a couple 99+ cars and then a good fox-bodied(89-95---yes 95mustanggt, i included YOUR car!)5.0 and see what you think. the 95+ cars have 33% stiffer bodies & the 5.0 have tons of torque & are easy to modify to go quick...i am still a fan of the 5.0's, but go with what YOU want, it's your money! later!

Whats wrong with a 60's mustang, sounds like you would be able to afford a fastback. Hell, pick up a stang for $4G's and you'll have A LOT of money to go fast if your thinking about a 01 stang. By the way, i think classic stangs stand out more, but dont worry guys, I love all stangs, well, v8 powered stangs.
