Silly IROC
I wasn't going to post this but I haven't had any races worth mentioning so this is the best I've got.
Last night I went trolling around and found nothing but just as I was about to give up, an 87-89 Iroc comes by throws a rev and takes off. I thought about this and knew it was probably a waste of gas but I'm in serious race deprivation so I followed him. First I had to chase after him since he took off without having the decency to wait for me. Eventually I pulled up on his passenger side at about 40mph and I noticed his girlfriend in the car and he was looking very confident. This was a joke, I gave him the move and let him take off about 10 yards ahead of me and then I laid into it. I passed him and gave him a nice "you shouldn't have tried this in front of your girl beating" you all would have been proud of. I must have had 15 cars on him which of course is ridiculous but I take what I can get at 11PM. ------------------ formerly 96cobra89lx306 (96Cobra/softtop-3.73,almdrvsht,fancontrl,steeda sbfrmes+shifter,eibachspgs,KYB's,FR-upper arms,Saleen copy-polished 18's,pulleys,Bassani X pipe(gutted),C&L 80mm Cobra DYNO 301rwhp horsepower before gutting the X pipe 93 Ford Probe Gt(slower but turns) [This message has been edited by 96SNAKE (edited 02-07-2001).] |

Gotta love it!! I waxed a few IROC's in the past, and I'm sure I will in the future. I like sending them home with their tail between their leggs. Good stomp.

How worthwhile do you think gutting the cats was? One of mine went bad and I'm considering just giving them the broom.

Where I live there is a extreme abundance of IROCs they love to show off for thier girls. The best time to search for a race here is after 2:00am it seems like thats the time every one with a fast car comes out, is it the same for you

97Snake,
I had a cat go bad too so I gutted both of them. I just couldn't let that expensive Bassani X pipe go to waste. Performance wise, it offered a noticeably quicker rev thru the gears and more top end power of course. The sound is awesome even with my stock mufflers. Overall though, I would rather have the cats on and functioning properly. The reduced emissions are my main reason. My car now has that familar off-road scent to it now that I'm not too crazy about. It's still cleaner than my 89LX was with offroads though for some reason. I used to cherish the stealth appeal of my quiet car and now that is sort of gone. Around town, I'm not sneaking up on anybody anymore with my exhaust in the lower gears. [This message has been edited by 96SNAKE (edited 02-04-2001).] |

I always thought that Chevy PAID for the rights of IROC (International Race of Champions). Thats what I read. And in the early 90's (before 92) they didn't extend the rights to the title and just discontinued the IROC-Z and kept it simply as a Z28. Thats what I read atleast, not too sure though

Whatever the story is behind those cars, most of them seem pretty candy a$$. I raced one a couple days ago who was all talking trash and saying he had beaten all kinds of stangs and stuff. I was thinking, yeah 4 cylinders. We went to a light and he launches from a red light. As soon as the other directions light turned red, he launch, I waited for the green (a split second) and launched, caught him in first, and wasted him in second. I pulled up to another light. And he wouldn't even pull up even with me. He stayed a car length back, so I throw it in reverse and back up with a huge grin on my face. He was so pissed he turned left out of the wrong lane. Gotta love em.

I swear those cars are extinct around here. You used to see tons of those things (Formula 350's too) a couple years ago.

Hey, are those Formulas fast? I raced one when I had the non-HO motor. He took me by a car length or so at 60. I want to find him and race him again since I've got the HO now. What should I expect?

I agree with LS1Jay. My friends '91 ran like his. On drag radials that Tuned port is great out of the hole, but anyone making decent power will catch you soon enough. Not to mention running from a roll.

Chevy lost the IROC series that is why they could no longer use the name.

Nothing was as bad as when Dodge had the IROC series in the early 90's & issued a IROC Daytona. That was truly sad.

How are the later ones closer to the LT1?? The 5.7 T.P.I. pushes like 240 stock while the LT1 is like 280 stock. Not too close if you ask me. And also they offered a stick versus strictly auto for the 92- and down, another difference worth mentioning.

I'm with exgmguy on this one in that I just about never run into one of these cars. Or, if I do, it always seems to be really ragged out and sounds like it's running on 6 cylinders.
I did see one last year at a cruise-in that was darn close to mint condition, had some mods on it too. E ------------------ 1991 5.0 LX Coupe -37,800 miles 13.17 @ 106.14 mph w/ 2.138 60' Pro-Charger D-1SC on the way!!! |
