Default Smoked by a GMC Syclone/Typhoon

I had no idea what I was up against, as I didn't know these things existed...

4.3L - Turbo charged and intercooled
All-wheel drive
Corvette transmission
280hp/350tq

They only made about 8000 of these monsters.

Anyway, I still have to figure out how to drive MY BEAST, as I just finished building it a few days ago.. It's a former 2.3L auto, now 302 t-5... Gt40 block, ported gt40 heads, edelbrock performer RPM intake, Holley 650dp carb, full MSD ignition, FRPP clutch, alum d/s, 3.73 gears, road-race suspension...blah blah...

VERY, short race. He's able to launch at some ungodly RPM and all wheels stick, sling-shotting him ahead....and I spin my tires, and then I miss third, even with my Hurst shifter.

Either way, I'm not experienced with 5.0's, I'm used to the 2.3L or my 5-speed 85 Escort..

I'll attach a pic of my car just for fun.

They didnt make many of those and i dont know how long they made them but they made two different versions. The syclone which is s10 based and the Typhoon which is Blazer based. They are VERY QUICK. I think stock they were like mid 13's but its probably easy to turn up the boost on them.

Later,
Nick

I think the Typhoons are considerably slower. I've beaten a handfull on the streets when I was running stock block, heads and intake.

Stock performance #'s that I have seen for the Syclone are 13.5s 1/4-mile and 4.6s 0-60. Luckily most of the Syclones I see these days are hurting or need rebuilding. Otherwise it could be a tough race for me.

I'm pretty confident that I *could* have beat him, if I could have launched better, not missed third, and then had the chance to REALLY push the speed limit.

The guy had dual a-pillar gauge pods, so I'm thinking that he knows what he's doing....Besides, with AWD and an automatic transmission, it's not too hard to be consistantly fast.

It's definately my driving skills that hurt me.

Man dont worry I know how you feel. I just got my 5.0 and the clutch is really strong when you push down on it. I'm still learning on it, I raced my friends 240Z the other day and he pushed me down slope cause I still need technique . Oh well I'll get the hang of it soon Man I also wish my 87 Blazer would have a turbo like those.

I'm not too concerned about that anymore... a 68 Charger R/T just BARELY beat me today, and I had two passengers... He was also blowing blue smoke, so.... dunno.

A brand new silver Vette convertable kicked my *** today as well, but he BETTER considering he costs three times as much. Didn't even break a sweat...nice car.

A Bently cost 5 times as much as a Vette. Price has nothing to do with it. but nice to see you giving him respect.

Anyway I had a Ty. and stock I ran 13.2@104 they are so damn "Quick" but not really that "fast" Unless you do about $500 in mods then they are both quick and fast. My brother had a Sy. and he pulled a 12.9@106 when stock. We both got into the low low 12.'s and 160 on the top for $500. They are about as areodynamic as a house so it takes alot to push them on the big end.

The Sy/Ty's are mean! I've seen them run on the street & at the strip... THEY FLY. The current world record of 9.985 was set last summer by Jerry McCoy.. You can see his truck & his shop @ www.tobefast.com

Yep those Syclones and Typhoons are QUICK.

They only made the Syclone in 1991 (S-10 version)

They made the Typhoon in 92 and 93 (Jimmy version)

I've heard the Syclone runs usually mid 13's stock and the Typhoon high 13's/low 14's stock. The MPH isn't great but the launch in unreal (AWD)

I was at the track a few weekends ago and there were two Syclones running.

One was running 11.90's at about 115, the other was running high 12's at about 105.

Yeah the Syclones were lighter, but I would rather have a Typhoon cuz they have a lot of room and they also have a nice leather interior. The Syclones did not come in leather.

I think when people say something is "quick", it accelerates quickly from a stop. Like the stock WRX or the Typhoon.

If something is "fast" then it accelerates quickly and has a hard pull all the way to top end. (Like a Viper or a Lamborghini)

sooooooo... How much do these things weigh, I wonder what would happen when I come to the stoplight with the lightning. they must be light weight. My truck if i had slicks would do about 12.4 @110 and its over 4000 pounds. Sounds like that AWD really gives them grip.

Sure

To me fast is 110+ in the 1/4 in a high 12's car quick is anything less in a high 12.'s car.

No really our Ty/Sy's were amazing at getting to 60-80 we lost to almost nothing from a stop to those speeds that is quick

But when we were chasing someone and speeds got into the 100's it was not the case beacuse our trucks were not as "FAST" as those that we were chasing untill we modded. We topped out at 125 till we changed some stuff around (governer) and then with the boost turned up we could break the 150 mark. ( his SY went 161 fwiw) 150+ is fast It's a rather grey area and can be interprated many different ways but thats my take
