The point that is being made is that if you take a given drivetrain from engine to tires, the speed of the tires is directly proportional to engine speed (with a manual tranny anyways), thus the speed of the vehicle can be calculated from engine speed. There are no terms for wind resistance, rolling friction, etc, because they are irrelevant to this equation. That is not the same as saying that these factors are not factors in determining a cars top speed.

Basically, if you know the engine speed, you know the speed of the car and it 'ams what it ams' regardless of its weight, COD, rolling resistance, etc.

HMM 175MPH, I DON'T KNOW...A guy on LS1.COM has a Twin turbo'd Z28 with a 6-speed and he has like 650rwhp with 3:73's and he tops out at like 186mph. Get a damn radar gun! WTF you had skinnies on when you did this?

P.S. the math says my Richmond 6 speed in 6 gear at 6500 says I can do 246.768 MPH, Think I can go that fast ?

sedanman 08-23-2001 12:09 AM

No matter what 5400RPMS in 5th with 3:73 gears is FLYING!!! I hope my car runs that well when I get the juice and the new motor done!

Skyman 08-23-2001 03:07 AM

Your crazy! I pushed 5000rpm in 5th with 3.73's and a 24.5" tire and that was fast enough for me!

According to my calculations, exgmguy was going 177 miles per hour.

If you were in 6th gear and you had an accurate tach that said you were doing 6500 RPMs, you would indeed be going 246.768 MPH. exgmguy didn't do 88.5 at 2700 RPMs and then just double it to figure if he can go 177. His engine was actually rotating at 5400 rpms.

Remember, NASCAR cars don't have speedos, the drivers calculate speed by the RPM's and gears. If it's good enough for NASCAR it should work for us.

You can take into account rolling friction, wind resistance and the amount of dust on the dashboard, but the diffrence between 170 and 180 mph isn't all that much. Nice run!

That is with an Autometer tach too. If I went off the stock dash unit I would probably be going 90 mph. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

wind resistance, etc.. does not change my gear ratio and tire size. All you have to do is hit the number on the tach in 5th and do the math. Simple as that.
