For future reference....a pop off valve is a valve that opens at a certain level of boost to prevent an engine from overboosting. A blow off valve(or bypass valve) on the other hand opens when the throttle plate closes preventing the air from stalling the turbo. A blow off valve vents into the atmosphere which creates the noise you heard, while a bypass valve vents back into the intake stream between the maf sensor(on cars so equiped)and the compressor. As far as you hearing the turbo, if he had a hard pipe kit or was running higher than usual boost, you would be able to hear a stock turbo. Not trying to flame, just trying to inform.
