Weight and times for early 90's camaro
A new kid was hired at my work. He has a early 90's (90 or 91) Camaro. I don't know if it's a Z28, but this is what I do know: It has a 305 with 130k miles on it and an automatic. The only work done to it is exhaust.
Now, the kid said he runs 14.9's with just the exhaust. He also said that the car weighs 2100 lbs!?! I know this cant be right. When he said it, I just kept to myself and nodded my head. My questions are, how much does his car really weigh? and is his car really capeable of a 14.9?? I want to build his confidence and get him to race me. Even if he runs a 14.9, I think I could take him without much of a problem. |
That kid is a comedian! 2100 pounds when he is smokin' crack maybe. I believe they are around 3500 stock. And a 14.9 with the auto maybe if he has the 3.42's and sticky tires. Lay down some cash and run him!
|
No way. This kid's got a mid 15 car at best. Kick his ***, seebass.
|
If it's a 305 auto w/exhaust it should look something like this at the end of the race...
....................................MUSTANG ...................CAMARO Those 305's make great boat anchors. They are really that S L O W. :D Good luck, E |
(stock) heavy and slow.
|
You could beat that kid with a flat tire! He must be really young and has lived a sheltered life.
|
seriously, they weigh about 3400-3500lbs and will run close to the 15.5-16 range with his engine/trans combo.
|
Agreed, its really around a 3200-3300 lb car.
A AUTO 305 w/ that many miles goes low 16's high 15's. I know from first hand experience. I wouldnt worry about it whatsoever. Skyler |
What about the early 90's 5.7 liter camaro's? I'm guessing the high 14's or so? I know a guy with one who may be interested in a little stoplight duel. Not sure if it's a auto or a stick though, but he's almost bone stock and getting up there on the odometer. I'm not worried about him, but a little background info never hurts.
*** Hey Sky...I know this is unrealated but I love the latest addition to to the sig. [ME: "3 Chicken Soft tacos." Tacobell DriveThru: "All I hear is a motor."] That's hillarious...can't even begin to count how many times I've been told "Could you please shut off your car? I'm having trouble hearing your order" A problem ricers can only wish they had..lol..later |
not worried
Sky, Your sig had me rolling on the floor laughing. That's hilarious :) .
I'm not worried about the camaro. I just wanted to get some info on it and get it's "real" weight. The kid is trying to sell it to buy a neon so he can rice it up  . I'm going to see if he can hang on to it for a month or so. I'll try and set up a race for April sometime and post the results if/when it happens. Thanks for the info guys!! |
An earlier RS with a 305 weighs around 3200-3300.
An L98 car in the early 90's can run pretty quick. My friends 1991 Formula 350 went 14.40's @ 98 completely stock. An SLP exhaust, pulleys, and an air filter got him 13.80's @ 100-101. Pretty impressive really. |
i had a friend challenge me to a race for a case of beer. he also has a late 80s early 90s camaro 305 with T Roofs and standard. im sure i can take him tho. lol ill let yall know
|
Haha, yeah... It happened to me the other morning at Taco Bell, so I'd share it with you guys.

Race him and then ask why he lost!:D

One thing to remember, all 350 turd gens were automatics from the factory. The t5 was only available behind the 305 or 6 banger. Of course, it's easy to swap in a manual, but if you know a car is a mostly stock 350, you also know it's an automatic.

I even had one of the guys working the window at taco bell compliment me on my exhaust and ask what kind I had. That was pretty cool. My car does have an interesting sound considering I have one 3-chamber on the right side and just an open h-pipe on the left. Hopefully when I pull her out of storage, I can put a new h-pipe with dumps on and ditch the half-assed approach. Although, it does manage to sound good though. It has a real race car sound to it, but with some rumble too. I guess thats what happens with a cross-bred exhaust. |
Re: Weight and times for early 90's camaro
the 305 came in differant flavors for the 3rd gens (especially since you don't know if it is a z28 or not) the top of the line tpi 305 still only put out about 220hp (can't remembr exact #s) with a 5spd these could dip into the 14's, but since you said it is auto and the owner sounds like a moron it is most likely the typical ragged out old car that runs in the 17's. nothing to worry about. just curious, but what was this kid baseing his quoted 1/4 mile time on? has he actually run the car before? i hate people that just make something up.

kids...
I have no idea what he based his "times" on. We were talking today and I had to set him straight on a few Mustang things. He thought that Roush Mustangs were $80k-100k. I had to tell him that he was mixed up.
I also told him that I had two friends with Camaro's. One has a 97 SS and the other has a 00 SS. Both are stock, Both are 6-speeds, and both run 13.6x@103.xx. When I told him this he said "obviously not stock anymore". He thought that those times were fast...oh boy  He also said that he has a friend with a 01 GT with only intake and exhaust. Said that it runs 13.5. I might get a race set up with the GT instead of wasting my time with his Camaro. Just have to get these 4.10's in and I'll be set (for a month or so) |
Go to www.carpoint.msn.com than go to used cars and look up info. It has all cars 88-02. Tells everything from amout of gas to hp to torque. Also tells weight and how they rate this car. I had this guy pull up one day by my house with a 87 305 RS. He had his girl friend with him he was acting all bad. He said that his car was heavier than my car so it was faster. I said no less weight is better. What a dumb *****. He just tried to argue. oh well I am faster and getting with his girlfriend. What he don't know I guess won't hurt him. Poor slow camero people. MUSTANGS RULE.
