Post What to expect?

Hey guys,

I was just qurious to what times i should expect at the quarter mile. I have never taken the car to the track YET, and havent raced anyone too close to compare, the closest race i had was with what i believe was a 73 mach1 w/351 auto 4speed. His was pretty stock, 4 barrel carb with dual exaust, not sure if he had headers. My mods are on my sig, my car is basically stock. When i raced the mach1 I won the 1st race by about a car, and in the 2nd he beat me by about a car, but i had a bad start.

Oh yeah, i also have a 3spd tranny, stock earend, i believe 2.80:1 from the factory, my tranny i dont remember the gears too much except for 3rd being 1:1 and 2nd around 2.73, or 2.63.

My rear tires are regular road tires, nothing good, they are 215's.

Another thing, my rear suspension is VERY lose, how much time would i lose if i get a stiffer setup?

Thanks guys, i plan on taking it to the track as soon as i can get the engine running better, dont want to screw something up, i think i already have a clicking lifter, let alone passing tech with minor stuff like a battery tray. Its hard finding extra money with my crapy job at the mall, especially since im paying all my own stuff, im 18 by the way.

Thanks

---Anthony

With out knowing too much about your car, I'd say somewhere in the low 15's, maybe high 14's. Before you buy too many more thing for your car, I'd get some gear in that rear end of yours. Anyway, let me know how close I am. Later.

I had a 66 fastback when I was your age and started out basicly stock. After a few engine mods.I installed a 9" rear end with 456 gears. It was easy, didnt even change the backing plates.A set of traction bars and some bald Mickey Thompsons and I was hell on wheels.
To get good power out of a 289 you have to make it rev.Port the heads and install a good cam with some really good valve springs.
Thats my 2 cents worth,I wish I still had that car.

Yeah, i'll post my times as soon as i hit the track, unless the Irwindale track opens up soon i think the next chance i'll have will be in january or feb, thats the next time california speedway will do the next 1/4mile racing again. What im disapointed about the irwindale track is that its a 1/8th mile track, when its done at least. Well, if you guys know of any other drag strips in so cal pass on the info, whats cool about these 2 are that they are very near by.

Dahm, now to get that battery strap, radiator overfill tank, and um... fix that hairline crack on my radiators neck.

I'm putting my money on high 15's or low 16's. Don't feel bad if it does end up doing 16's. I've seen a 67 coupe do a 17.9 with a 6cylinder and a 3 speed. That same car came back and did a 10.98 with a mexican 306 aluminum headed 150 shot built c4 and a 4.11 posi. Maybe that'll be your story.

Man, i hope im not doing 16's, lol, na, but if a I6 was doing 17.8's im sure im somewhere in the 15's, my lil bros stang has a I6 with auto though and mine is a lot faste than his.

By the way, I didnt put this topic up so that i can tell people "yeah i have a 14 second car" I just want some what of an idea so that when i hit the track i can have somethng to shoot for, well, a realistic number. I dont know what a 12sec car feels like, but I think i would like to get my car up there, if not faster, of course not with my current setup, but i think i would be really happy with 12seconds while its my daily driver.

66, I'm guessing mid 15's. I assume you've got a 2.80/1 or 3.00/1 open rear axle. Remember the 289 Hipo K code cars with 4 speed and Traction-lock only ran 15.6-15.8 back when they were new. Of course they were saddled with bias ply tires too. Is your cam stock?

Racer, the heads and cam will probably limit you to 15's for now. That ain't all bad. You can still run head to head with some 95-98 stock GT's and will waste some of those 305 Camaros pretty badly.

Everybody has to run against somebody in their class for it to be any fun. I can beat stock LT-1 Camaros but not LS-1's. I'd be an idiot to think I can beat Z06's or Vipers.

There will always be someone faster. Just compete against those that seem in your league or at least close. Those are really the only fun races anyway. The ones that are a foregone conclusion, are really no race at all. That means not smoking any Yugos either, LOL.

Yeah, i love the close races, even when its a cars length it isnt JUST AS exciting as when its neck and neck! Yeah, i try being very modest about my car, especially since i dont know what it is completly capable of yet.

l8er guys, i'll put a new topic with my times, when i get to race!
