Whooped an '85 GT with my Wife's Volvo
This was hysterical.
We're on the freeway when an 85 GT convertible comes up fast and cuts us off. We both accelerate, and I pull away from the GT, twice, from 70 to about 110 mph. I should mention I was in my wife's 97 Volvo Turbo wagon. From a drag start, we would have been dead meat against the GT, but it was fun to beat one on the freeway where the Volvo has a good aerodynamic advantage. Imagine the humiliation of getting beaten by a Volvo wagon. Pretty much sucked for the other guy. To be honest, I always thought my wife's car was faster on the freeway than my LX was, at least when stock. Racing the GT was a blast. Thought I'd share this story with you guys... ------------------ Russ L '91 LX Procharger, 3 row intercooler, extrude honed Cobra intake, Mac full Length Headers, 30# inj., 73mm C&L, 75mm tb, E303 cam, 289 rods, ported E7 heads, MSD, T-Rex w/255 lph Walbro, 5 lug conversion, Cobra R wheels, 3.27 gears and Moser Axles. |
wow, shows how much the mustang is missing up there, but some heads/cam would clear that up....
plus they have realistic speed limits in europe so their cars have to perform up there. |
Hee, hee, it's been so long since I've had a decent race. I'd probably be ready for a Volvo wagon.

Well I think it only makes sense...if it is anything like the other european cars like bmw and mercedes you are built for highway speed...my little 2.6 liter 89 benz is no good for dead stop but on the highway I can leave people on demand...high revvin highway gears kick azz over 30mph

Don't forget, they also offered the sorry *** CFI 140, or 160hp AOD combo too.
That wouldn't have made the 85GT much to respect. |
I had a very close race with a volvo a while back!
it was a v70(x/c?)R wagon with the full-on iPD modifications (exhaust, computer, turbo upgrade too, i think) i had stock heads at the time, fortunately i had juice too! ------------------ Rob Wegner 90LX |

Believe it or don't, Car & Driver (or Motor Trend or R/T...can't recall) rated the top speed of the 850 T5 Wagon at 150+ mph. Most other magazines reported 144-145 as a top speed. With it, I've out-accelereated non-turbo 300Zs and hung close with mid 80's vettes. Makes 'em really pissed off. This is on the freeway of course. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif ------------------ Russ L '91 LX Procharger, 3 row intercooler, extrude honed Cobra intake, Mac full Length Headers, 30# inj., 73mm C&L, 75mm tb, E303 cam, 289 rods, ported E7 heads, MSD, T-Rex w/255 lph Walbro, 5 lug conversion, Cobra R wheels, 3.27 gears and Moser Axles. Maybe I missed it. Do you know what the actual track times or G-Tech times are? I'm sorry, but i just can't believe that the Volvo wagon can do better that 15-16's, turboed or not.

Hey Rev, the Volvo 850 T5 won't beat most cars in a 0-60 race or Quarter. Drag starts are hampered by extremely tall gears, but it does accelerate swiftly at freeway speed.
Like most European cars, it's designed for high speed running and accelerating at speed. 222 hp, turbo power band, great aerodynamics...that's what makes it work on the freeway. FWIW, the new V70 T5 has reported times of high 14s, I believe with the auto. ------------------ Russ L '91 LX Procharger, 3 row intercooler, extrude honed Cobra intake, Mac full Length Headers, 30# inj., 73mm C&L, 75mm tb, E303 cam, 289 rods, ported E7 heads, MSD, T-Rex w/255 lph Walbro, 5 lug conversion, Cobra R wheels, 3.27 gears and Moser Axles. |
