Post Z-3 M BMW Loses to '66 Coupe.....barely

First good run I've had in some time. I saw this Z-3 BMW ahead and then saw the 2 chrome exhaust tips on each side. Yes there were the fender flares and the wide tires. When I got closer, I saw the M badge. This was my lucky day, but would he run? We're on a wide boulevaurd street in Houston, divided by Braes bayou with 3 lanes on each side. At the light I gave a mild rev which he ignored. We started off easy and I thought he wasn't gonna go, but I had the C-4 in low in case he did. Sure enough, at 20 he nailed it. This gave him a 1/2 length jump that he maintained through 1 st gear. After that I pulled on him slowly and passed him at 60-70. I don't watch the tach or speedo when street racing (just keep my eyes glued to road ahead and shift by ear) so I'm not sure of the exact speed. After I pulled ahead abput 1/2 car he let off probably at 70-75. I've never gotten one of these yuppy types to go before in any BMW M, so I was happy.

I think there are 2 versions of the Z-3 M. Maybe a 3.0/290 hp and a 3.2/330 hp. Does anyone know how to determine which it was. All I saw was the M and that was enough to get my adrenaline going. Does anyone know what these cars do in the 1/4 mile?

The car was quick. I would have preferred not to go from a roll, but apparently that was how he wanted it, maybe so he could get the jump. Anyway, it was a fun race and a legitimate kill.

Rev,
According to www.bmw.com, I found that their were 3 models. A 1.8, a 2.0 and a 3.0.

The 3.0 roadster weighs 2998 lbs, is rated at 227 HP @ 5900 RPM, 221 ft*lbs @ 3500. That should be good for high 13's (if he's an excellent driver)but probably low 14's (?)

The 2.0L roadster wieghs almost the same and is rated at 147 HP @ 6900 RPM, and 140 ft*lbs @ 3500. That is at best a 16 second car.

Thanks for the input 95. I think I saw in a recent Motor Trend or Car & Driver that they did a big upgrade for '01. The car I raced probably was low 14's car. It was the exact same scenario as my last good street race against a LT1 Camaro which should be low 14's. I just wish they would acknowledge the rev so I could stand on it off the line. My car hooks well and is one my strong points with the C-4. If they spin, then I get a huge lead. Maybe I'll find another M, but it's hard to get these guys to drag race their yuppy-mobiles.

There are the Z's that 95 just mentioned, the 3.0 replaced the 2.8 . And then there is the M roadster wich has the M3's I-6 in it. I believe the new M roadster has approx 330 hp. It is a very potent street fighter, I drove one in my BMW racing school. I love them. Light Em Up!!

This one was a Z-3 M roadster. I'm just not sure of the vintage. It was a newer one though. A really sweet looking car.

There are like a million of those here. As long as I watch out for the M's I should be okay, right? I would hate to lose to one of these rich Eurof*gs.

This guy in Ottawa is going around with a BMW Z8... 400HP in the size of Miata roadster and looks to kill.

Now that is a machine not many can kill.

Way to go, Rev!

Those Z3 "M" models can really scoot. They look relativley light, so with 300 or so HP, they should be able to motor quite well. That said, that was a great kill!

Did you happen to see the look on this face when your 66 Stang showed him the tail lights? That must have been good!

Actually never showed him my lights while we were still in it. He let off as soon as I got 1/2 length on him and then turned off, so I just barely got him and it took a long time to reel him in. Never saw his reaction to the run. I might have gotten him better if we had gone from the light. Most of these exotic car guys won't stage at 4000 and dump the clutch, which is what he'd have to do to get a good launch.

The M roadster, M coupe, and M3 all have a 24o HP I-6. The new M models coming over are going to have a Vette killing 330HP I-6. The M3 will pull very low 13's. So I imagine the Roadster and Coupe may very well be able to pull high 12's.
Only the M3's w/ the new engine are coming this year, others to follow next year, and theres only going to be something like 5000 of them.
So you raced a 240 HP M roadster and they are capable of hitting 13.9's w/ an awsome driver. Great kill. They are very cool cars but usually have a**hole drivers. Way to put him in his place.
