Unhappy Are the 2.3 NA Fox 'Stangs supposed to be this slow?

I was just wondering because mine is slow. Just thought I'd check with you guys.

I've gone from driving one of the fastest cars on the road in Augusta to the probably THE slowest. HA! But on a positive note, the body is in pretty good shape and the interior's quality is in VERY good shape - pretty much spotless (minus the door panels) - I have to admit I am amazed. Yes, this is the '91 I was yapping about in my other post (for those of you who read it). I'm saving tons of gas (I better be saving something with such an utter lack of power . Makes me chuckle ). Oh well, it drives wonderfully and the interior is spotless. Gonna get some Mustang rims from a friend of mine and make it look a little more presentable, know what I mean?

I REALLY miss not driving the '79 already and it's only been about 4 days, but everyday I come home and see the '79 relaxing in front of the house, I tell her, "It's for the better". Gonna take her out for a spin Sunday... race a friend of mine who just got a new bike. He wants to race me.

They are unbelievably slow. My sister had a '93 4 cyl and I hated driving it, it was one of the slowest cars I've ever driven! For a daily driver, it's fine! Hey, I drive an Olds for a daily driver!!!
Have fun with it, put some stickers on it and lower it and put a big exhaust on it and bug the ricers! Bling bling YO!

You know what the sad part it? The 1991+'s were faster than the older ones. I think it was in 1991 that the little 2.3L got it's HSC (high swirl combustion) heads and upped hp from 88 to 105. I got better fuel economy with my 88GT 5spd than the 88LX 2.3L auto, especially on the road.

Looks like your car has some late 70's wheels on it? Mercury Capri stye?

I suppose you could always swap in a turbo coupe's driveline, hehehe.

YES they are slow as crap, especily with a auto(I would kill for a 5-speed in mine). But they do get good gas milage, but I don't give a crap about that. That's why a 302 is gonna be goin in the 4 banger's place

yeah them damn 4 bangers!!! we just got our first snow here in MA and i'm stuck driving my 4cyl now. i hate not hearing my mufflers rumble while driving, but its all for the best.

a freind of mine took his 89 4 cyl put a cam in, freeflowing exhaust, and a few other minor things. he said it was a little quicker, but not like a 5.0!

Well cool. Just making sure.

Man, of course I already been thinking about doin stuff to it to make it a little spiffier, but, I ain't gonna get sidetracked with my money--it goes to the '79.

Yeah, the wheels are the same hub caps that come on the '79 (if it wasn't bought with rims) I had the exact same kind on my old '79. DOnt' know what happened to the stock '91 wheels that were on the '91. I KNOW for SURE that my old V6 '79 would have molested this '91 in the quarter. I ran a best of 18.7 in the old '79. I wouldn't be surprised if all this could run in the 1/4th is 20-22. The '79 supposedly came stock with a 2.8L, 171 c.i. V6 w/ 102 hp.

6T9Pony, your Nissan would crush my '91.

No mustang is supposed to be slow! Unfortunately, there's many of them out there that are.

I know my 78 Mustang II with the 2.3L was damn slow! But I bet you could probably beat my winter beater, a 90 Hyundai Excel with the whopping 1.5L big block engine!

I dunno Fox Body...my engine, the Z24 (2.4L) was rated at 106 Bhp....that's less than yours! I do have a 5-spd though....That would help me out a little bit....

I'm sure you would beat me though. Because PKRHED, dang it, I've done that before, I mean PKRWUD (haha...j/k....if he reads this) is in the process of helping me fix a little malfunction on my carburetor. So I'm running on 1 of 2 barrels.

You'd smoke me man...It takes me like 5 minutes just to get up to speed on the highway....ok, not QUITE 5 minutes....more like 4 1/2....hehe....j/k....

But seriously...you'd smoke me....I can't even get the tires to turn over when I sidestep the clutch from a standstill...

I did replace the rear leaf springs on it yesterday afternoon. One of them broke so I just got a set from the junkyard...kept the good one that I took off of it for a spare. But it looked like it had potential to snap like the other one.

I'm making a pretty good little truck out of it though. All new shocks, new heater motor, new heater control unit, stripped interior to just about nothing and cleaned the **** out of it, and got rid of all the old useless wiring. I think I am going to buy some new tires for it before next winter though. Or at least swap the fronts to the back. I get no traction whatsoever on ice if don't have it in 4WD. It won't move, at all.

This does remind me...after school the other day it was really icy and still a lot of snow on the ground, so me and a friend went and had some fun in the Shitsan. I got my front tires in some pretty deep snow, took it out of 4WD, and started banging gears. Had it in 4th gear with the speedo up past 80, all at a standstill....Got down to the cement though and started smoking them off...had a pretty good cloud of smoke for like 85 hp...hehe...When I put it in 4WD drive to get out of the hole I didn't move. Tried rocking it and everything. But my tires had carved a hole about 5 inches deep in ice, so my friend had to go give it a little shove to get me out of the hole. Hehe...what fun....

HA!

Alright, I have a decent chance of beating you on the hwy, but from a stoplight, naaaaaah I dont' think so. There cannot possibly exist a slower street legal vehicle.

Yeah man. I spent most of day renewing the '91 (vaccum washing it and cleaning the interior. I still need to check the spark plugs, get better rims and tires, etc. Kinda like you 6T9PONY, and your mighty Nissan, I'm fixing up little things on the car. I can at least make sure the lil 4-banger is doing as well as possible, AT LEAST.

heh, if you didn't live so far I'd have to challenge you to a race and see just who really is the slowest.......

Can that thing powerstall? I'd love to see some pics of a 4 banger burnout!!! I've had my Nissan in a 4th gear "powerstall" (kinda), with the speedo at about 80....but, yeah, that was on a thick sheet of ice.....like 6 inch think of compacted snow and ice....I posted about that experience in a different thread.....

Once PKRWUD gets me straightened out with this Throttle Valve Switch I bet I'll be able to take you. From a stop and on the highway....maybe not the highway I guess.....you'll have to take a trip to "The Good Life" and hang out with me for a while....we can run em then...We could probably even do it in town since our cars are so slow...it's not like we're going to be going fast or anyone will even notice we'd be racing......hehe.....

Mine will BARLEY power brake. But I've got a little trick to really smoke them down. Do a little burn out then drive thought some sand of loose gravel. THEN power brake it, let the RPM's build up a little then pop off the brake and it will spin through third

If you refer to past issues of MMFF, to project white trash, I believe the staff reported that the 2.3L ran (to the best of my memory) approximately a 22 sec 1/4 mi. I know they started to blow up the motor with a nice shot of n2o, but I forget the numbers on juice. 16 or 18 I think, I'd have to read back. Anyone else remember?

Hey Mustangbelle, always good to hear from you. And yeah, I totally remember that article. I read it when I had my V6 '79 stang and thought to myself, HA, my stock '79 ran a best of 18.7 on the track. I totally expect 21-22 in the 1/4 from this car. I am so sure that I won't even take the snail to the track to find out When I ran my V6 '79 there, my brother picked at me and said it looked like I was going on a Sunday drive (cause the car was so slow, yeah, but it still ran a best of 18.7 )

LOL, you're probably right. BTW, I heard the weather sucked in Nebraska .... But I'd like to try and spin the tires on ice at 80 mph. I think that'd be fun, uh, that is until I CRASHED AND DIED!!!!!!!!

Nahhh.....the weather isn't that bad....ok....well...maybe it is....hehe...pretty nice today though....50s....still quite a bit of snow on the ground from that last storm though...

It would take all of 22 seconds for me to drive my Nissan 1,320 feet.
