The Carb sounds a little to big for that cam. WHile stock heads do suck...No doubt about it.....You can get a cam that puts more of a duration, and lift on the exhaust side to soften the performance blow that stock heads have on the exhaust side.
Also, some mild polishing and cleaning of the chamber, runners, and valve pockets will help out. Also look for an exhuast system that has a cross over, and a good set of long tube headers to help scavenge the exhaust out quicker and more effeicently.
Those steps should help build some impressive numbers out of a 289 using stock heads. Just gotta find away to over come the Handi-Cap.
Wienand Stealth is a good street/strip intake. I'd reccommend it before I reccomend the Eldlebrock Perfromer RPM, or the Performer intakes.
