Anyone remember the BBS days?

Does anyone remember BBS's? I used to run one, and it was quite active in my little area. This is way back before the internet and AOL make them obsolete. It was a kinda computer community, since everyone was local.

I ran a WWIV 4.24a BBS. I still have my old software and user lists. I got hacked 2 times in 3 years I think, and I was pissed! Never found out who did it.

So who else was a BBSer?

My sons used to get on those local BBS's all the time here in Houston using their Commadore 64's. kept my phone line tied up constantly. Took 8 hrs. to download some pirated computer game. Finally started making them do the downloading after 11:00 pm so the phone would only be unusable during the wee hrs. Had forgotten all that until you mentioned it.

Oh yeah, I had a C64... But the PC's were the way to go http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif I remember spending hours downloading huge porn files from BBS's when I was like 14. Before JPG, the files were like 400-500k a peice and at 2400-9600baud that was slow!

I remember those days, they were great. My Commodore 128 with a 2400 baud modem. Seems almost archaic compared to now. They were great cuz you could find almost anything you needed, or have someone upload it and you can spend hours downloading it.

I use tel-net to cruise some bbs's still today. some of the more underground ones have some good hack proggies that you really can't get anywhere else. er.. so ive heard.....

I've never run it except on the street, it has new wheels & tires, new exaust, and that about covers it. Looking to change a lot in the future including engine. Any ideas are appreciated.

I wrote some BBS software called Genesis. It had a Citadel-like messaging system. Citadel was cool since users could create their own message areas and maintain them. If they didn't get much volume, we would just delete them.

I hit my first BBS back in 85. I was 19, jobless, and moved to a new state so I didn't know anyone. I went online with a screaming 1200 baud modem that had tons of transmission errors. It was a great way of meeting new people.

Writing the BBS got me gainfully employed as a consultant when I was 20. I was making $1200 a week and living at home. It paid for my Mustang. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif
