ATTN: DSM Owners! Talon/Eclipse!

I found a 1990 Talon Turbo 5spd with 70,000 miles on it for only $1500. I really had my heart set on an AWD, but do you think this is worth the money? Can I still go pretty fast w/ out the AWD? Think its worth it?

Thanks,

Skyler

the only thing the all wheel drive woul help with would be road holding and launches. E.g., being able to hold throttle through turns where it would normally kick out hte rear end on a rwd car. Correct me if i'm wrong please!

Beware of those cars!!
I have heard way too many stories about those cars. Yes, they are fast and nice looking but tons of problems. I was looking at some of these cars too. The turbos are almost guaranteed to go at some point as well as the timing belt and if that goes you are pretty well screwed because that can cause major damage to the engine if that lets go!!
The final choice is yours but I wouldn't do it. I listened to the advice I was given and because of that I bought an '88 mustang GT with 74K miles for only $3000 in excellent condition.

$1500!!!!!! what the hell is wrong with it? If he says nothing, don't buy it!

I used to own a 1990 TSI AWD, it was fast and gripped the road like a Porsche. However, the car was EXTREMELY expensive to fix. I would not recommend it if your going to thrash it on depend on it!!! For something like a OEM clutch I had it installed for a mere $610 US!!

If the AWD or tranny goes your into $2000 - $3000, EASY.

the turbo is guaranteed to go at some point, but that is true for any car with a turbo. I think that turbos usually go before the 90-100k mark on volovos and they know a lot about em, earlier on others. I would bet the turbo doesn't have much left in it.

inferno 02-16-2001 12:22 PM

you know, you can have a turbo "rebuilt" for less than 200 bucks. A rebuild on any turbo should come at about 75k miles and well make sure that it last another 75k plus miles. I really think that maybe you should put the money into your Integra instead of buying another car to hook up. Let me know if you want any ideas about what to do to your Integra. In the meantime, e-mail me the contact info for that Eclipse so that I can check it out....I am in need of another vehicle while I am trying to sell my old car.

Yeah Sky, that Eclipse is way to many car's for you. What's the dudes info?

Hehe, whatever.

Anyway the Eclipse is junk, but quick and easy to get faster. The FWD models are faster on a roll, but they don't get the awesome launches.

Sky, I work in the parts depot for Chrysler/Jeep on the weekend. Every single technician there absolutely HATES those cars. They told me that they break constantly, are expensive to fix, and just plain not built well. But for only $1500, as long as you can afford to put $1500 more into it, why not?

Inferno I emailed you. Yeah I think I'm gonna let the car pass.

My motor mounts are gone I realized on the stang, and the clutch slipped the other day. So money better spent on it.

Had a 1997 Talon AWD TSI...

I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND A POS GARBAGE CAR LIKE THAT. Don't get me wrong, the AWD is fun in winter... but the damn thing would about $1400 in payments, repairs, insurance and gaz everymonth.

In 2 and half years everything on it went except the Car seats and steering wheel.

I had 4 Tansmissions, 3 Clutches, 1 Turbo, Exaust and Manifold (for major components) blow up on me. For a new car it felt like a POS.

Garbage. Not worth your time in my opinion.
