Unhappy Auna's Back in the Hospital

She was admitted to the hospital ER last night with a severe infection in her hip. They transferred her via ambulance to Children's again. They decided the best thing to do was to perform surgery, so they put her out and opened her up to insert a tube in her hip to drain the infection out. She'll be on morphine for a few days. They said she'll be in a LOT of pain for the next 2-3 days, and of course, she'll have to remain in the hospital that she got out of on Wednesday.

I'm so angry and upset. Everything is so simple to me, the way that I look at things. Nothing is too much of a mystery (barring girls). I don't understand why they had to open her up, or why she's got such a serious infection only 3 days off being on a powerful antibiotic. Why can't they just take a syringe and stick it in there, remove the infection, and give her a local antibiotic? Children's is a **** hosptial in my opinion. They handled her spinal mengitis poorly, taking the deadly disease lightly. Now they've said they are going to have to aggressively target the infection so that it doesn't destroy her hip. They want to look at her spleen to figure out if her immune system is okay. The doctors gave some lame-o excuses of how she could have gotten it, and said 50% of the time they never figure out why. ****, they don't figure out much. Certainly been my experience. I paid workers comp bills for a couple of years. They can't figure out which end they crap out of sometimes. Just makes me so ticked off.

I went to visit her at home on Wednesday night. Her first day out of the hospital and brought her 3 Dragonball Z videos I picked up. The next night I went and we stayed up till she was ready to keel over watching Goku battle Cell and Majin Boo. She's such a sweet little kid. I hate to see her cooped up in a hospital hurting to the point they cannot give her enough morphine to kill the pain or it would kill her. My sister is just destroyed. She just took off 2 weeks from work without pay, money she didn't have. Her co-workers put together over $500 for her, a real saving grace. Now she gets to sit in the hospital next to her daughter, and hope for the best again.

jimberg, and fordgasm, I want you two guys to know I did make it to the show, albeit I was a little late. I was waiting for word on Adriauna, and I didn't arrive until 2:45, when most everybody was packing it up. Ran into a few friends of mine who shared some burnout stories about the N/A Gray car with the frame reinforcement and all that, and how the mid-life crisis guy couldn't shift for crap. Heh. If I wouldn't have trusted those website directions I would have been there closer to 2:15. I knew where the place was, too. Sorry I wasn't early enough to meet up with you.

Man that sucks! I hope things start going better for her soon. I hate it when things like that happen to kids. It's awful.

Unit, I understand your anger and grief and frustration regarding Adriauna's illness. The first and fore most treatment for a servere, localized infection is INCISION and drainage accompanied by powerful IV administered antibiotiotcs. My bet is that they will insert a drainage tube to the infected area that will stay there for awhile, and which will be better than syringing out the fluid (actually a byproduct of the infection). I know it's hard, but you must let the docs do their job the best that they are capable of. My thoughts are with Adriauna and the extended family.

Exclamation Get Well, Adriauna!

Unit:

So sorry to learn of this setback for your little neice. Of course I wish Adriauna a quick recovery and my heart goes out to her mom, dad and immediate family, including you, Kell.

Tough break but bad things do happen to good people, even kids, and as we know, doctors are fallible and they make mistakes or bad calls. I respect physicians but I don't overestimate their abilities to screw up - as well as do wonderful things. Of course I also believe in prayer so I never trust everything to mortal men, anyway.

My best wishes for Adriauna's recovery, as little discomfort as humanly possible and her discharge from the hospital as soon as possible.

Kell, that's terrible news to hear! I'm so sorry this is happening to anyone at all, let alone the two of you. Christine and I saw this post last night, and both wanted to say something, but were too taken aback by it. I have a feeling she will get in touch with you soon, though. I sincerely wish Auna, and you, nothing but the very best, and feel certain that with family support and love as strong as yours, she will be doing well before you know it!

Best wishes!

Take care,
-Chris

My prayers are with her. If ya need some one to e-mail man, I'm here for ya. I would say give me a buzz, but I'm always at work.

The word is good, again.

They took Adriauna off morphine, and they have her on tylenol right now. She's still on IV antibiotics, but the doctors are considering allowing her off the IV and onto oral antibiotics in the next day or so. If they let her take oral antibiotics, she'll be out tomorrow, instead of Friday.

She's beginning to perk up now that the morphine is out of her system. This time around has been a lot more draining. Her white blood cell count is dropping, and they've said that's good. The doctors are unsure what caused the infection because their culture isn't growing much Don't ask me how that's possible. I've never seen an infected culture not grow.

Anyway, looks like she's gonna be out by Friday at the latest. She'll be sore for a while though.

Thanks, everybody!

I am so sorry to hear she's back in the iron cage (that's what we call the hospital because of the steel cribs....)

As for the infection, I know it's frusterating, but it is just one of those things that can happen after a systemic infection. Hospitals are the worst places to be to recover. I don't know how many times Brayden was septic (blood infection) *because* of the hospital. He has a line in his chest that went to his heart for IV drugs and nutrition for 2 years. This was often the source of his infections. If I recall...Audriauna had a PICC line (an IV that has a long internal line thread to the heart) This may be the source of the systemic infection. If it is truly in the hip (Osteomyelitis) it may take quite a long time for her to recover 100%, even after the infection is cleared. Brayden had fungal and bacterial osteomyelitis when he was 3 years old. It took about 4 months for him to regain full range of motion without pain. Of course, he is a medically fragile child, so hopefully since she is an otherwise healthy child, her recovery will be more rapid and complete.

She is most certainly in my prayers!

Well, Auna went Super Saiyan, and took that infection to school. She's out of the hospital, and I'm more convinced than ever that Children's Hospital in Minneapolis sucks. I'm not gonna get into all the details this time.

Here's the scoop they gave my sister when Auna got out. It was an infection that sometimes appears in spinal mengitis cases after treatment, but is very rare with the bacterial version. She was supposed to be on IV antibiotics at home, but they failed to give the necessary products to my sister, or the necessary instructions, and when the nurse showed up to help the next day, the IV had clogged because the vein had collapsed. My sister told me is just reeked when they pulled it out.

Adriauna's now on oral antibiotics, and she'll stay that way for a while yet. She is finally walking around again, and she doesn't want to take any pain medication. I know she's hurt because she's limping a little (to be expected), but she doesn't want to go back to the hospital I'm sure, so she's covering up the pain.

I went over there last night and visited with her for a few hours. Her bandage is nasty, and they didn't give my sister any instructions or materials to change it. Karla is calling today to find out what she's supposed to do, and she's a little worried because there are stiches there.

Hopefully Adriauna will be back to her hold self in a week or two. No medical estimates were given to me.

We are taking care of my grandma who has a bed sore that won't go away. We talked to a wound specialist also so if she can't get anyone to tell you stuff My dad can give you a simple list of stuff that works. Also Monday the nurse comes and she can get info for me also.

I wish her the best
